Men's Basketball Canisius College Athletics

Men's Basketball Beats Marist for Third-Straight Win

Frank Turner and Greg Logins scored 16 points apiece and Julius Coles was credited with his second-straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Canisius College Golden Griffins cruised to a 75-49 victory over Marist Friday night in the Koessler Athletic Center. The win was the Griffs' third straight an improved the team to 10-18 overall and 4-13 in the MAAC, while the Red Foxes slipped to 9-21 overall and 4-13 in league play.

Turner finished the night with 16 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals, while Logins posted his 16 points after he shot 6-for-11 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Coles also went 6-for-11 from the floor and knocked down three 3-point field goals to go with his career-high 11 rebounds. Tomas Vazquez-Simmons added 13 points, five rebounds and a career-high three assists in the winning effort as the Griffs shot 45.8 percent from the floor, 31.6 percent from 3-point range and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe. Canisius, which finished with a 46-27 advantage on the glass, held Marist to 32.1 percent from the field and turned the ball over just nine times.

The Griffs used a 21-2 run over a span of 6:51 in the first half to take a 29-10 lead with 6:10 left before the intermission. In the first stanza, Canisius held Marist to 25.8 percent from the floor and the Blue and Gold went into the locker room with a 38-18 lead, the team's largest halftime cushion of the season. In the second half, Marist's Ryan Schneider hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to make the score 44-31 in favor of the Griffs with 16 minutes to play, but that was as close as Marist would get the rest of the night, as the Blue and Gold answered with the game's next six points, highlighted by a tip-in basket and ensuing free throw by Elton Frazier.

“I thought we really, really defended them, certainly in the first half,” Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. “Any time we defend, we keep our turnovers down and we make free throws, we're a pretty good team.”

Robert Goldsberry matched a career-high with seven points to go with five rebounds and two assists in 36 minutes of action. Chris Gadley came off the bench and posted seven points and five boards for the Griffs. Schneider was the only Marist player to post double figures in the final box score after he scored 12 points in the loss, all coming in the game's final 20 minutes.

Canisius will close out the 2008-09 regular season Sunday, March 1, at home when the team meets Siena on Fan Appreciation Day. Tipoff in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 2 p.m.
