Quinnipiac Scores Win Over Men’s Basketball on Senior Day

Quinnipiac guard Asim Jones scored 23 of his game-high 27 points in the second half, with 12 of those 23 points coming on four second-half 3-pointers, as the visiting Bobcats posted a 67-63 win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action at the Koessler Athletic Center Sunday afternoon.

The win, which snapped Quinnipiac's four-game losing skid, moved the Bobcats to 19-12 overall and 12-8 in MAAC action, while the Golden Griffins saw their season come to an end with a record of 10-21 to go with a 5-15 mark in league play.

Canisius junior Bryan Ndjonga scored a team-high 17 points to go with eight rebounds in the season finale for the Griffs, while fellow junior Khalil Singleton added 14 points. Junior Mike Evbagharu posted his fourth double-double of the year with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while graduate student Myles Wilmoth closed out his collegiate career with seven points, four boards, an assist, a steal and a blocked shot.

In a game that featured 14 lead changes and nine ties, Canisius led 56-51 with 5:57 left to play after Wilmoth knocked down a jumper from just outside of the paint. But from there, Jones took over for the Bobcats, scoring 11 of the game's next 15 points, highlighted by three 3-point field goals over a 2:20 span. Jones trimmed the Griffs' lead to two points at 56-54 with a 3-pointer from the right wing, and moments later, he gave Quinnipiac the lead for good with 2:56 showing on the clock when he drilled a triple from just in front of his team's bench. After Canisius followed that Jones trey with a miss, Quinnipiac's Keith McKnight pushed the Bobcats' cushion to 64-60 with 2:05 left after he took a pass from Jones in transition and slammed it home for two of his 22 points on the afternoon.

Canisius made one last push at Quinnipiac and trailed 64-63 with just 16 seconds left after Ndjonga flushed one down with two hands, but that was as close as the Griffs would get the rest of the way, as reserve guard Tai Turnage made 3-of-4 free-throws in the closing 12 seconds to seal the victory for the Bobcats.

The Griffs held a 30-29 advantage at the halftime break despite shooting just 33.3 percent (10-for-30) from the floor in the game's opening 20 minutes. Five of the Griffs' first 10 makes from the field came from 3-point land, and Canisius' defense was able to hold Quinnipiac to a 28.1 percent shooting effort in the first half, a 20-minute span where the Bobcats went just 9-for-32 from the field and missed all 10 shots from 3-point range. Canisius took its largest lead of the game with 7:45 left before halftime, as the Griffs rode a 10-0 run over the span of 1:26. In that surge, which was capped by one of Singleton's two makes from 3-point land, Evbagharu scored four points, and Wilmoth knocked down a triple as well. With 4:47 left in the opening stanza, a traditional three-point play by Singleton pushed the Blue and Gold's lead back to 10 at 29-19, but Quinnipiac closed out the final 4:32 before the intermission with a 10-1 run, with six of those points coming from the free-throw line.

Quinnipiac out-rebounded Canisius by a 45-38 clip on the day, and 14 of the Bobcats' 45 rebounds came off the offensive glass. Canisius was credited with 12 assists on 23 field goals, with Evbagharu dishing out a game-high five. Graduate student Max Jusianiec was good for three of those assists to go with five points in his final collegiate contest.
