Brooklyn, N.Y. - Canisius
senior guard Frank Turner scored a career-high 27 points, while teammates Greg
Logins and Julius Coles added 13 and 11 points apiece in the Golden Griffins'
79-69 win over St. Francis (NY) in the Pope Center Saturday afternoon. The win
is the first of the year for the Griffs, while the host Terriers slipped to 0-3
with the loss.
Turner scored his career-high 27 points after he went
9-for-11 from the field and 9-for-11 from the free-throw line in 36 minutes of
action. Turner also added seven assists, six steals and four steals in the win,
the team's first road win in the month of November since 2006-07 season.
Logins and Coles were forced to the bench early in the first
half with foul trouble, but were able to overcome to finish with double-digit
points in the scoring column. Junior Tomas Vazquez-Simmons came off the bench
to pull down 10 rebounds to go with three blocks while freshmen Alshwan Hymes
and Reggie Groves added seven and six points, respectively.
Canisius came out in the second half and locked down the
Terrier offense, allowing the host squad to shoot 34.4 percent over the final
20 minutes, thanks in large part to a relentless amount of ball pressure that
forced 19 St. Francis (NY) turnovers, 10 of those coming in the second stanza.
"It wasn't perfect, but the guys realized that the intensity
from practice needs to carry over to the games and we did that today," head
coach Tom Parrotta said. "They knew they had to bring that defensive attitude
today to be successful, and we did a real good job of sticking to our
principals as well."
The Blue and Gold broke the game open with an 8-3 run over a
span of 3:13, with Turner scoring six of the Griffs' eight points during the
stretch, as Canisius posted a 54-43 lead with 12:22 left on the clock.
Canisius' margin hovered between 10-12 points for most of the second half, but
down the stretch, the Terriers made a run and cut the score to 67-58 with 3:54
left in the contest. Canisius was able to keep the Terriers at bay down the
stretch with quality free-throw shooting, knocking down 9-of-11 tosses from the
charity stripe in the final 90 seconds of the game.
For St. Francis (NY), Ricky Cadell scored a team-high 22
points while teammate Akeem Bennett added 21 points and six boards in the loss.
The Griffs will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 24, when the
team meets cross-town rival Buffalo in Alumni Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
