Iona Pulls Away From Men's Basketball

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. ? Canisius College sophomore Tomas Vazquez-Simmons was one of four Golden Griffins to score in double figures with a career-high 16 points, but it was not enough as the Blue and Gold fell to Iona College 69-58 Friday night in the Hynes Athletic Center. The win improves the Gaels to 7-9 overall and 2-3 in the MAAC, while the Griffs slipped to 5-10 on the year and 0-5 in league play.

Vazquez-Simmons scored his 16 points after he went 6-for-9 from the field and 4-for-7 from 3-point range to go with five rebounds and two blocks. Fellow sophomore Greg Logins was credited with his fourth career double-double after he posted 11 points and 13 rebounds. Elton Frazier and Frank Turner added 12 and 10 points, respectively in the loss.

Iona freshman Scott Machado scored a team-high 15 points for the Gaels, who closed out the night with four players in double figures. Guard Milan Prodanovic chipped in 11 points in the win for Iona, which has now won three of the last four meetings against the Griffs.

Trailing 59-56 with less than 4:00 left in the game, Canisius cut the Iona lead to one at 59-58 after Vazquez-Simmons pulled down a rebound off a missed jumper and slammed it down. From there, the Gaels scored the game's last 10 points after the home team went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line in the final 3:26.

"I thought we played hard tonight, we just didn't' take advantage of the chances we had," Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "We really competed until the end, but we're still learning to win. The turnovers played into it too, but overall, I'm pleased with the 40-minute effort tonight. Our guys didn't back down."

Canisius closed out the night shooting 44.9 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from 3-point land, while Iona shot 48.8 percent from the floor and 72.7 percent from behind the arc. The Gaels also held a 31-26 advantage on the glass, with Gary Springer and Jonathan Huffman pulling down six rebounds apiece.

The Griffs will return to action Sunday when the team plays Fairfield in The Arena at Harbor Yard. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m.

Game Notes: Iona now leads the all-time series between the two schools 26-25... Vazquez-Simmons matched his career high with six made field goals and nine field goal attempts while setting new career highs in 3-pointers made (4) and 3-point attempts (7)... Turner's three assists was a team high for the game, the 50th time in his career he's led the Griffs in assists... Three of Logins' four career double-doubles have come this season.
