The Cameroon National Basketball team's bid for a spot in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing came up short Tuesday as the team fell to Puerto Rico (1-0) by a score of 81-72 in the preliminary round of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Athens, Greece. Canisius College assistant men's basketball coach Lazare Adingono served as Cameroon's head coach.
Five Puerto Rico players posted double figures in the scoring column in the win, led by Ricardo Sanchez's team-high 17 points and nine rebounds. Carlos Arroyo, a member of the Orlando Magic, chipped in 16 points after he went 3-for-5 from 3-point range. For the game, Puerto Rico shot 48.1 percent from behind the arc.
Cameroon forward Harding Nana led his native country with 22 points and 14 rebounds, while former Rhode Island guard Parfait Bitee added 17 points and three assists in the losing effort.
Cameroon (0-2) dropped its first game to Croatia July 14. Cameroon qualified for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament by finishing second at the 2007 FIBA Africa Championships in Angola. Adingono serves as the team's head coach in that tournament as well, and helped lead his native country to its first basketball medal in 33 years.
