Baseball Completes Sweep at Marist

Using a six-run sixth and seven-run eighth, the Canisius College baseball team completed a three-game sweep with a 14-6 win over Marist Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins, now on a four-game winning streak, improve to 8-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and to 26-4 overall on the season.

Sophomore Ian Choy (right) led the Griffs with three hits while junior Branson Joseph and junior Connor Burke each had three RBIs. Sophomore Mike Goemans (4-0) went 5.2 innings to get the win while freshman Josh Marshall went 2.1 innings to get his first collegiate save.

“It's always a good weekend when you can go on the road and sweep a quality team in the conference,” Canisius coach Mike McRae said. “Josh Marshall did a great job out of the bullpen, coming into the game with the tying run at first and their top hitter at the plate. He really settled the game down for us. We also received some quality two-out hits to extend our innings.”

Marist (11-16, 5-7) took a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two in the third. Andrew Stanton hit a solo homer in the second while Kenny Anderson had an RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch in the third.

Canisius then scored 14 of the game's next 15 runs during a five-inning span, getting on board with a two-out RBI single from Kevin Mahoney in the fourth. The Griffs scored six runs in the sixth, with five of the runs coming with two outs. A Joseph sac fly made it 3-2 and after Kevin Mailloux grounded out, Ryan Asis doubled, to start a stretch where nine straight Griffs reached base. Canisius got RBI singles from Burke and Kevin Reimer, as Burke stole home later in the inning. Choy and Joseph each walked with the bases loaded later in the inning to make it 7-3.

Marist brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, after starting the inning with the first four Red Foxes reaching base. With the bases loaded and nobody out and one run already in, Josh Sawatzky induced two pop outs. Marshall then came into the game and struck out Ryan Gauck to end the inning.

Canisius broke it open with seven runs in the eighth. Adam Donato led off the inning with a solo home run. Mahoney had a sac fly and Burke doubled home two more runs. Alec Cabello had an RBI single while Choy walked for the second time in the game with the bases loaded. Joseph capped the scoring with an infield single.

Canisius returns to the field on Wednesday, when the Griffs play at St. Bonaventure. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
