Box Score

Freshman Brian Burton had four hits and three RBIs while junior Alex MacKenzie (right) allowed one run in eight innings as the Canisius College baseball team defeated Appalachian State 10-1 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis, N.C. on Friday afternoon. The 5-0 start to the season for the Golden Griffins is the best since the Griffs started 7-0 in 1954.

Canisius struck early, scoring twice in the second inning and four times in the third. With two outs in the second, junior Alex Cabello took the first pitch down the right-field line for a double, scoring Kevin Mahoney and Burton. After the Mountaineers scored one in the bottom of the second, Canisius broke it open in the third, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Burton.

Ian Choy started the inning by reaching on an error. After Branson Joseph struck out and Kevin Reimer walked, Kevin Mailloux singled to load the bases. Burton then cleared the bases on a 1-1 pitch to make it 5-1. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch, Mahoney brought Burton home on a sacrifice fly.

Mailloux added a solo home run in the seventh inning before the Griffs scored three times in the eighth. Choy singled home Adam Donato to make it 8-1 and Reimer hit a two-run home run to close out the scoring.

MacKenzie improves to 2-0 on the season with his eight-inning effort. The junior righthander allowed six hits and walked one while striking out three. Junior Aaron Boag finished the game by pitching a perfect ninth.

“We continued to play well, which came against an excellent team that has beaten Wake Forest and North Carolina State already this season,” Canisius coach Mike McRae said. We ot outstanding start from Alex. We swung the bats well and continued to play solid defense.”
