Marist Rolls Past Women's Basketball

Marist connected on 16 3-pointers en route to defeating the Canisius College women's basketball team 91-46 at the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The loss, which extends the Griffs' losing streak to four games, is the worst home loss in program history. The 16 3-pointers by Marist sets a record for most by a Golden Griffin opponent.

Junior Amanda Cavo led Canisius (10-14, 5-8 MAAC) with 18 points and was the only Golden Griffin to score in double figures. The Griffs shot 44.8 percent in the first half, but only 15.4 percent in the second half, scoring a season-low 13 points in the half.

The Red Foxes shot 60 percent in the first half and 49.1 percent on the game while making 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes. Julianne Viani led Marist with 25 points, going 6-of-11 on 3-pointers while Rachele Fitz had 19 points and seven rebounds. Lynzee Johnson and Sarah Smrdel each had 13 points for Marist.

Marist (23-2, 13-0) broke the game open by scoring 14 consecutive points, turning a 12-11 lead into a 26-11 advantage. Marist made 4-of-5 3-pointers during the run, getting two from Viani and two from Johnson.

The Red Foxes, who have won 13 straight and 16 straight regular-season MAAC games, extended their lead to as much as 31 in the first half, going up 55-24 on a jumper by Viani with 2:31 left in the half. Canisius then scored nine consecutive points ? getting two baskets from JJ Williams, a 3-pointer by Micayla Drysdale and a layup by Mere Mullins to make the score 55-33 at the break.

Canisius cut the lead to 20 on two separate occasions in the second half. After a layup by Laura Buetow made it 57-37 with 16:25 remaining, Marist scored 12 consecutive points to push its lead to 69-37.

“We didn't compete at all today. I'm extremely disappointed in our effort in front of our home crowd,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “I don't want to take anything away from Marist, because they are a very good team, but I will not accept our performance.”

Canisius returns to the road next weekend for two conference games, starting at Saint Peter's. Game time between the Griffs and Peahens from the Yanitelli Center is set for 7 p.m.

Game Notes:
The Griffs extended their NCAA Division I record for consecutive games with a made 3-pointer to 414 games on a make by Cavo less than a minute into the game... Canisius has dropped four straight for the second time this season and has lost four straight conference games for the second consecutive year... The previous mark for most 3-pointers made by a Canisius opponent was 15, set by Missouri State on Dec. 21, 2007... The 13 points scored by the Griffs in the second half are the fewest by a Canisius team in a half since the program went to the Division I level for the 1986-87 season... The three 3-pointers by Canisius matched its season low, which came Dec. 15, 2007, against St. Bonaventure... The 21 turnovers by the Griffs stand as the most since they had 24 against Wright State Dec. 1... Mullins matched her season high with eight rebounds and has now played 354 minutes this season, setting a career high.
