SYRACUSE, N.Y. ? Syracuse sophomore Rick Jackson scored a
career-high 14 points and junior Paul Harris added 13 points and 11 rebounds as
the No. 11/11 Syracuse Orange defeated Canisius College 82-60 Wednesday night
in front of 16,262 fans at the Carrier Dome. The win improves Syracuse to 10-1
on the season while the Golden Griffins slipped to 3-7 with the loss.
For Canisius, junior Frank Turner posted a team-high 18
points and six assists, while sophomore Julius Coles added 17 points and seven
rebounds. Sophomore Elton Frazier tallied 10 points and six rebounds in front
of his hometown crowd. Sophomore Tomas Vazquez-Simmons pulled down a season-best
nine rebounds.
A 19-3 run over that spanned both halves and lasted close to
six minutes proved to be the turning point in the game. During that span,
Syracuse turned a 31-31 contest into a 50-34 advantage two minutes into the
second stanza.
Canisius jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the game's first
three minutes on the power of two 3-point field goals by Frazier and Turner. The
Orange responded with an 18-7 run to seize a five-point advantage, 20-15.
The Griffs battled back and knotted the game at 31 after
Coles connected on a 3-pointer. Syracuse answered with the game-changing
stretch to take a commanding 16-point advantage.
Canisius would cut the Syracuse lead to as few as 11 points
following another 3-point basket by Coles, 50-39. However, Syracuse would seal
its 10th victory of the season with a 10-0 run.
“I think we can take a lot of positive things out of this
game,” said Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta. “We got up-and-down on the floor
and we did a good job not turning the basketball over. We showed we can compete
and be competitive with one of the country's best teams.”
Canisius shot 31.5 percent (23-73) from the field and
connected on 4-of-22 3-point field goals. The Orange made 46.7 percent (28-60)
of its shots, including 60.9 percent (14-23) in the second half.
The Griffs return to action on Saturday, hosting the Navy
