ALBANY, N.Y. -- Siena guard Edwin Ubiles scored a game-high 20 points and the host Saints were able to turn 18 Canisius College turnovers into 23 points en route to a 77-49 win over the Golden Griffins Monday night in the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. Siena improved to 12-6 overall and 7-1 in the Metro Atalntic Athletic Conference with the win, while Canisius slipped to 3-15 overall and 1-7 in league play.
For the Griffs, Frank Turner scored a team-high 15 points, while freshman forward Rishawn Johnson (pictured) chipped in a career-high 11 points to go with four boards. Tomas Vazquez-Simmons had a game-high 10 rebounds and posted four blocks for Canisius, which shot 39.6 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from 3-point range in the team's fifth-straight loss to Siena.
Siena jumped out to an early 11-2 lead and took a 42-26 lead into the break after the host team shot 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range in the contest's first 20 minutes. In the second half, Siena led by as many as 30 points thanks to a 41.2 percent shooting effort by the Saints and eight Griff turnovers.
"You can't win many games when you turn it over that much," Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "Siena made us pay for turning it over. They scored 23 points off our mistakes. That was the difference."
Canisius will return to action Friday, Jan. 25, when the team travels to Fairfield. That game will be broadcast live on ESPNU, and is set to tip-off at 7 p.m.
Game Notes: The meeting with Siena was the 78th in school history, which ranks third on Canisius' all-time opponents list... Turner now has double figures in the scoring column in four straight and in eight of the team's last 10 games... Vazquez-Simmons leads all freshmen in the MAAC in blocks with 44 and is averaging 2.1 blocked shots per game in league contests.
