Box Score

Seven different players scored at least seven points, including four who reached double figures, as the Canisius College women's basketball team opened its home schedule with a 78-33 victory over the Colgate Raiders on Monday night from the Koessler Athletic Center.

Sophomore Brittan? Russell filled out the stat sheet with eight points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and a career-high nine steals in 33 minutes. Senior Laura Buetow led the Griffs in scoring with 12 points and had eight rebounds. Junior Amanda Cavo had 11 points while senior Mere Mullins and freshman Micayla Drysdale each had 10 points with Drysdale handing out seven assists and not committing a turnover.

The Griffs broke open an 11-6 game in the first half by scoring 27 consecutive points and holding the Raiders scoreless for a span of 9 minutes, 58 seconds. Canisius (1-1) connected on three 3-pointers during the span and received contributions from six different players in the run.

The 45-point win for Canisius is the biggest for the program while at the Division I era with the previous mark being 44 points, which happened Feb. 15, 1995, against Manhattan (105-61). The 33 points allowed were the fewest by the Golden Griffins at the Division I level with the previous low being 37 points scored by Utica on Jan. 9, 1988.

The 33 points ranks the fewest scored by a Canisius opponent since Buffalo tallied 31 points against the Griffs on Feb. 4, 1981. The 45-point win is the biggest by Canisius since a 51-point win over Mercyhurst Feb. 20, 1986.

“Colgate is a young team that has been struggling with injuries. That combination is tough,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We wanted to pressure them from the start, and that worked out for us tonight.”

Sami Kozlowski led the Raiders (0-2) with nine points in the game while Krista Moser came off the bench to gather a team-high 10 rebounds in 26 minutes.

Canisius returns to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 20, when it hosts Binghamton at the Koessler Athletic Center. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Buetow's 12 points were the most for the senior since she had 13 at Boston University Nov. 26, 2006... Mullins reached double figures for the fifth time in her career while Russell had double-digit rebounds for the second time in her career... The 28 forced turnovers were the most by a Canisius opponent since the Griffs forced 30 at Colgate last season.
