Robert Morris Sweeps Softball in Non-Conference Action

The Canisius College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games at Robert Morris University Friday afternoon in Moon Township, Pa. Canisius fell in the first game by a 5-3 count before dropping game two 7-6 in 10 innings. The Golden Griffins fall to 10-18 with the losses while the Colonials advance to 4-23-1 with the sweep.

In the first game, Robert Morris scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings en route to a 5-3 win. Canisius jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first two innings of action. Freshman Caitlin Lever went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a run batted in, while teammate Beth Enk also went 2-for-4 with two doubles.

In the second game, Robert Morris scored a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to post its fourth win of the campaign. Trailing 6-4 after five innings of play, the Griffs plated two runs in the top of the sixth inning to push the game into extra frames. With one out and runners on the corners, Canisius cut the Colonials' lead to 6-5 when senior Melissa King scored from third on a base hit by junior Becky Owen.

Freshman Jill Foit came around from second base to knot the game at 6-6 after sophomore Natalie Oskia registered a base hit and Foit was able to score on a throwing error. Owen finished the second game 2-for-5 with a run scored and a run batted in, while Osika went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore Mary Burke went 1-for-5 with a double and two RBIs in the loss.

Canisius freshman Lindsay Garbacz took the loss for the Griffs in the second game, giving up seven runs on nine hits in 9.1 innings of work.

The Blue and Gold will return to action Tuesday, April 13, at home when the team plays host to St. Bonaventure at the Demske Sports Complex. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
