Softball Sweeps Mount St. Mary’s with a Win on Sunday

Freshman Maddy Hans' RBI-single to right with two outs in the fifth inning proved to be the difference, as the Canisius Golden Griffins posted a 2-1 victory over Mount St. Mary's in MAAC softball action Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

The win gave Canisius the series sweep of Mount St. Mary's and improved the Griffs' record to 11-20 overall and 7-10 in league play, while the Mountaineers fell to 13-23 overall and 9-7 in conference action.

GAME RECAP
After playing three scoreless innings, Mount St. Mary's got on the scoreboard first in the top-half of the fourth after Tristin Koerner hit a solo homer over the fence in right off Canisius starter Olivia Manchester. That lead was short-lived, however, as the Griffs tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a solo homer off the bat of senior Sofia Escoto. That home run was Escoto's second of the season.

Mount St. Mary's had two runners on base with one out in the top of the fifth, but Canisius freshman Mia Preuhs, who came on in relief of Manchester, got the next two batters she faced out to end the Mountaineers' scoring threat. In the home-half of the fifth, sophomore Grace Walker led off the inning for the Blue and Gold with a base hit to center. Freshman Michaela Sycalik came into the game to pinch-run for Walker and eventually moved to third base thanks to a sac-bunt by junior Rebecca Hai and a ground-out to second base by freshman Talia Yermian. Hans followed Yermian and took a 1-0 pitch from Mount St. Mary's starter Ellie Meier the opposite way to right field, allowing Sycalik to score from third, giving the Griffs the 2-1 lead.

With the 2-1 advantage, Preuhs retired six of the next eight batters she faced to earn the win in relief, her second win of the weekend and her third win of the season overall. Preuhs gave up three hits and fanned three Mount St. Mary's hitters in 3.0 innings of scoreless relief. Manchester took a no-decision after she tossed 4.0 innings, where she gave up one run on five hits to go with five strikeouts.

Canisius had five hits off Meier, who fell to 5-4 on the year after she allowed two runs, both earned, on those five hits while walking one and striking out one. Escoto was the only Canisius player to record multiple hits in the winning effort, while junior Ella Johel finished the day by going 1-for-3 with a stolen base in the victory.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius leads the all-time series with Mount St. Mary's, 14-4.
• Canisius' win on Sunday improved the Griffs to 7-0 all-time at home against Mount St. Mary's since the Mountaineers joined the MAAC before the start of the 2023-24 academic year.
• This serves as Canisius' first three-game MAAC series sweep since April 20-21, 2024, when the Blue and Gold took all three games from Siena at home.
• Escoto's homer in the fourth is her sixth career home run, and it is her first homer this season since she went yard against Bellarmine on Feb. 14. Sunday's game was also her fifth multi-hit game of the year.
• Han's two-out RBI-single in the fifth was her third run batted in with two outs this season. All three of her two-out RBI hits have come in MAAC play.
• Sophomore Bella Martin drew a walk in the bottom of the first to extend her streak of reaching base safely to eight-straight games.
• Johel's infield single in the sixth inning extended her hitting streak to five games.
• Manchester has struck out five-or more batters in five games this season.
• All three of Preuhs' wins in the circle have come in MAAC games, and all three of those victories have come at home. Sunday serves as her second win in relief this season, as she also earned the win in relief after tossing 1.2 innings against Fairfield on March 29.

UP NEXT
Canisius will return to action April 18-19, when the team travels to Lawrenceville, N.J., for a three-game MAAC series at Rider. All three games next weekend will be broadcast on ESPN+.
