Rider Scores Twice in the Fifth to Defeat Softball

Kendall Reda-Fehsal's double with one out in the fifth drove in a pair of runs and helped lead the host Rider Broncs to a 5-3 win over Canisius in MAAC softball action Friday afternoon at Herb and Joan Young Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

The win improved Rider to 21-18 overall and 11-8 in league play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 11-21 overall and 7-11 in conference games. The loss snapped Canisius' three-game win streak.

GAME RECAP
With the score tied at 3-3 in the home-half of the fifth, Reda-Fehsal lined the first pitch she saw from Canisius reliever Mikaila Obenrader to the gap in left center, allowing teammates Maddie Luedtke and Keegan St. Cyr to score. In both the top of the sixth and seventh innings, Canisius had the game-tying run at the plate, but Rider pitcher Gabi Rdriguez was able to keep her team's two-run lead en route to her eighth victory in the circle this season.

Canisius started the game off with an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI-single from senior Sofia Escoto and an RBI-single back up-the-middle off the bat of sophomore Grace Walker. Rider would eventually take a 3-2 lead by scoring single runs in the home half of the first, second and third innings. In the third, with the game tied at 2-2, Abby Cruz singled to left, which allowed Luedtke to score from second base. Luedtke ended the day by scoring two of Rider's five runs in the victory.

Canisius knotted the game at 3-3 in the top-half of the fifth. Freshman Maddy Hans led off that inning with a double to left and then scored a short time later after senior Bailey Alatorre reached on a defensive error by the Broncs. Canisius ended up leaving a pair of runners on the bases in the fifth, two of the nine runners the Blue and Gold stranded on the afternoon.

Canisius banged out 10 hits off Rodriguez, who went the distance and struck out one to go with a walk in her complete-game effort. Canisius starter Olivia Manchester took the loss in the circle for the Griffs after she allowed five runs on nine hits to go with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Escoto ended the day by going 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Hans and Walker also recorded a pair of hits in the losing cause. One of Hans' two hits on the day was her double in the fifth, and fellow freshman Renee Hester also had a double for the Griffs. Junior Ella Johel went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
