Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Scores a Pair of Wins Over Mount St. Mary’s

The Canisius softball team earned a pair of MAAC wins over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex, as the Golden Griffins defeated the Mountaineers 3-1 in the first game before taking the nightcap of the doubleheader by the score of 1-0.

The two victories improved Canisius' record to 10-20 overall and 6-10 in MAAC play, while Mount St. Mary's fell to 13-21 overall and 9-6 in conference games. The loss in game one ended Mount St. Mary's seven-game win streak, which was the longest active win streak for any team in the conference at the start of the day.

GAME ONE RECAP
Canisius wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the day's first game, as the Blue and Gold scored two runs in the home half of the first inning and never looked back. With one out in the bottom of the first, sophomore Bella Martin extended her hitting streak to seven-straight games with a single to center, and she scored moments later thanks to junior Ella Johel's triple to left. Johel crossed the plate later in the frame on a sac-fly by senior Bailey Alatorre. That RBI was the 20th run batted in on the year for Alatorre.

The Mountaineers cut Canisius' lead in half to 2-1 in the top of the fifth thanks to a sacrifice-fly by Taylor Williams. But Canisius quickly pushed its lead back to two runs in the home-half of the fifth after Martin lined an RBI-single through the right side of the infield, allowing sophomore Grace Walker to score from third base.

In the top of the seventh, Mount St. Mary's put its first three batters on base thanks to a pair of walks and a base hit by Sharon Manni. At that point, the Griffs lifted starting pitcher Mia Preuhs for reliever Liv Herrington, and Herrington proceeded to retire the next three batters she faced in order with three fly-ball outs to secure the win for the Griffs. Herrington was awarded a save, the first of her collegiate career.

Preuhs evened her record in the circle to 2-2 on the year after she allowed one run on three hits to go with three strikeouts and five walks in 6.0 innings of work. Canisius banged out seven hits in the victory off Mount St. Mary's starter Sophia Schmehl, who fell to 4-5 on the year after she allowed three runs on seven hits to go along with five strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Bella Martin and Johel each had multiple hits in the victory, and Johel's first-inning triple was the only extra-base hit of the game. Martin and Johel also each posted an RBI and a run scored in the victory.

GAME TWO RECAP
In the day's second game, Canisius sophomore Mikaila Obenrader went the distance and scattered six hits over 7.0 innings for her first career complete-game shutout win in the circle. Obenrader threw 75 pitches in the win, which improved her record to 2-7 on the year.

Canisius scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the fifth. After senior Sofia Escoto led off that frame with a base hit, freshman Talia Yermian came into the contest to pinch run. Yermian was able to score from first base on the very next pitch after fellow freshman Avyree Sherman lined a double to the gap in left center for her first career extra-base hit.

Mount St. Mary's infielder Avery Dinges led off her team's half of the sixth with a base hit, but was promptly thrown out trying to steal second base for the first out of the inning. After Gina De Giorno reached with a single to left, Obenrader was able to end any threat by getting Emma Tawney to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. That was one of two double-plays turned by Canisius' defense in the second game.

Mount St. Mary's pitcher Emmaleigh Zagrodnicheck was the tough-luck loser in the circle for the Mountaineers, as she fell to 3-6 on the season after allowing just one run on four hits while fanning six Canisius batters. Sherman and fellow freshman Maddy Hans each had a double in the game two victory for Canisius, while Escoto and Walker also had base knocks in the win.
