Hockey Invades West Point To Face Army

Canisius College Golden Griffins (5-8-7, 5-4-3 Atlantic Hockey) vs. Army Black Knights (8-10-3, 3-8-3 Atlantic Hockey)
January 30-31, 2004?7:00 p.m. Tate Rink - West Point, N.Y.

A Look At The Griffs Heading into the homestretch of the Atlantic Hockey season, Canisius is one of the conference's hottest teams of the second half, riding a 5-0-2 mark in its last seven league games. The Griffs' last Atlantic Hockey loss was a 3-2 defeat by this weekend's opponent, Army. Freshman Michael Cohen leads the Blue and Gold with eight goals and eight assists for 16 points, ranking him second among the league's newcomers. Junior Bryan Worosz (4-6-6) has been solid in net for the Griffs and enters tonight's contest with a 2.78 GAA (4th-AH) and an .899 save percentage (9th-AH).

Scouting Army Army will attempt to snap a three-game scoring drought against the Griffs. The Black Knights have been shutout by Air Force (3-0) and twice by Quinnipiac (2-0, 3-0) since last scoring in a 4-3 win over Air Force on Jan. 16. Sophomore Seth Beamer leads Army with 11 points on four goals and seven assists. Sophomore goalie Brad Roberts, the Atlantic Hockey Preseason Goalie of the Year, tends the net for the Black Knights with a 5-8-3 record, a 2.73 GAA and a .917 save percentage. Head coach Rob Riley is in his 18th season behind the Army bench and has a record of 253-280-33 entering the weekend. He has a 20-year career record of 302-294-34 and is the second winningest coach in Atlantic Hockey behind Canisius head man, Brian Cavanaugh.
Series History vs. Army Canisius trails by a one-game margin in the all-time series, 7-8-1. The Griffs and the Black Knights tied the season series last year, 1-1-0. Canisius defeated Army 3-2 in Buffalo, while Army won 3-1 at West Point. The first game between the two teams was played on November 29, 1992, a 4-0 loss by Canisius. Since becoming a Division I program, Canisius is 5-3-1 against the Black Knights.

Lost For The Season??? Junior Fred Coccimiglio had back surgery Oct. 27 to repair two ruptured discs in his back and will be out indefinitely. The surgery, which was performed at Sister Hospital in Buffalo, could keep Coccimiglio, one of the Griffs' captains and last season's leading scorer, out of action for the remainder of the season.

Last Time Out LEWISTON, N.Y. ? An end-to-end affair between the Canisius College hockey team and host Niagara University finished in a 3-3 tie, illustrating all the characteristics of the heated cross-town rivalry between the Purple Eagles and Golden Griffins. After earning a 6-3 win over Canisius Thursday, Niagara fell behind 1-0 just 22 seconds into the contest, as the Griffs came out with a flash of energy that they did not displayed in much of the loss two days prior. The sellout crowd of 1,600 at Dwyer Arena fell silent early in the first period, as freshman forward Michael Cohen followed a shot by senior Rob Martin that ricocheted off the chest of Purple Eagles goaltender Jeff VanNynatten, falling in front of the goal crease. Cohen was able to put in the loose puck, lifting the visiting Griffs to a one-goal lead just 22 seconds into the first period. Not to remain down, Niagara forward Joe Tallari equalized the game at 1-1 at the 15:27 mark of the first, getting a stick on a cross-ice pass from linemate Justin Cross and one-timing the puck past Canisius junior goaltender Bryan Worosz. With Niagara forward Chad Murray in the penalty box at the start of the second period, the Griffs scored a power-play goal early in the middle stanza. Junior forward Ryan Corcoran drove down the left wing and was able to find an opening between the left post and the pad of VanNynatten, giving the Griffs a one-goal advantage. As neither team was to build more than a one-goal lead in the game, Niagara's Marc Norrington tied the game midway in the second, scoring in his third-straight game. With the score tied heading into the third period, Niagara's Paul Muniz gave Niagara its first lead of the contest, gathering the puck near the Griffs' crease and shooting it into the roof of the net, over Worosz who was still down after making an initial save on the first wrap-around attempt. The Purple Eagles held onto the one-goal lead until the 13:12 mark of the final period. A long slapshot from sophomore defenseman Tim Songin beat VanNynatten, who was screened on the attempt, tying the game for the visitors. Several scoring attempts by both teams in the final moments of the third period and overtime would follow the Songin goal, however the score would end at 3-3. Niagara outshot Canisius, 40-25, in the game. Worosz made 37 saves for the Golden Griffins, while Niagara's VanNynatten made 22 saves in the tie.

Mr. Humanitarian Canisius College junior hockey captain Mark Perisck (Yorkton, Sask.) has been named as a finalist for the ninth annual Hockey Humanitarian Award, presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen. Persick will be honored prior to the Griffs' Feb. 21 contest against Sacred Heart at 7:00 p.m. at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. Five players, including a repeat finalist, have been chosen. Finalists can be viewed on the award's website at www.hockeyhumanitarian.org. The recipient will be announced April 9 during the Frozen Four in Boston. Persick was nominated on the basis of his service and community work at Canisius as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He joins former Griff Ryan Stewart (a 1998 candidate) as the only Canisius hockey players to be candidates for the award.

Hall of Fame Former Griff forward Mike Sisti was inducted into the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame Saturday Sept. 28, 2002 joining three other former Golden Griffin Hockey players (Mike Torrillo, Gary Roessler and Kevin Sykes) and Canisius ice hockey founder Dr. David Dietz. A four-year letter winner in ice hockey, Michael Sisti ranks fourth in career scoring (163 points), third in career goals (74), and sixth in career assists (89). He shares the school record for single-game goals with four and holds the mark for single-season hat tricks with six. Sisti posted 13 goals and 19 assists to help the Griffs to a 21-11 record in 1986-87. He led Canisius in goals (33) and points (57) in 1988-89 and was named the team's top forward. Sisti served as an assistant coach at Canisius and Mercyhurst before becoming the first Mercyhurst women's hockey coach.

All In The Family Several members of the 2003-04 Golden Griffins have interesting connections to the professional sports world. They include: Ryan Corcoran - nephew of Lou Nanne (player/coach/general manager with the Minnesota North Stars from 1968-78, captain of the U.S. Olympic Team in 1967-68 and inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998) Joe D'Urzo - cousin of John Massara (former captain at University of Maine, member of Italian National Team) Andrew Dawe - cousin of Jason Dawe (1991 second-round draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres, played with Buffalo, Montreal, and the New York Islanders and New York Rangers) son of Mike Dawe (played for Cornell University) Jon Durno - brother of Chris Durno (four-year letter winner for Michigan Tech in the WCHA) Tim Songin - son of Paul Songin (played defense for the University at Buffalo hockey team) cousin of Tom Songin (played right wing for the Boston Bruins) cousin of Ed “Butch” Songin (played quarterback for the Boston Patriots) Jeremy Redquest - son of Greg Redquest (fourth-round selection of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1976 NHL Draft) Jaymie Harrington - brother of Lance Harrington (member of 2001 NCAA Division III Ice Hockey National Champions at Norwich) Max Buetow - son of Bart Buetow (played football in the NFL for the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings and played football and hockey at Minnesota)
Home Sweet Home Enjoying a 38-18-11 record within the confines of Buffalo State Sports Arena over their five-plus seasons. Canisius completed the 2002-03 regular season with a 7-7-2 mark at home.
