Late Goal Sinks Hockey at Niagara

Declan McDonnell scored with 3:17 remaining in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and lift Niagara to a 3-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey America action Friday at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston, N.Y.

Nicholas Niemo and Jacob Maillet also scored for the Purple Eagles (12-20-1, 9-15-1 AHA). Deivs Rolovs recorded 35 saves in goal for Niagara.

Seniors Grant Porter and Killian Kiecker-Olson scored for the Golden Griffins (16-15-2, 11-12-2 AHA). Sophomore Petter Wickström Stumer turned aside 23 shots between the pipes for the visitors.

With the scored tied at 2-2 late in the third period, McDonnell collected a stretch pass from Ross Roloson and got behind the Canisius defense before lifting a backhand past Wickström Stumer to give the Purple Eagles the lead.

Canisius pulled the goaltender looking to tie the game, but the Purple Eagles were able to hold off the late surge to secure the one-goal victory.

Earlier in the contest, Porter opened the scoring just 76 seconds into the first period, burying junior Walter Zacher's centering feed for his 12th goal of the season.
Niemo brought Niagara level with just over three minutes remaining in the opening frame, sneaking Noah Hackett's cross-ice pass past Wickström Stumer to knot the score at 1-1.

The teams exchanged power play goals during the second period. Kiecker-Olson restored the Griffs advantage with 8:27 elapsed in the middle frame, tapping home a loose puck from just off the right post to give Canisius a 2-1 lead.
Maillet tied the game once again less than three minutes after Kiecker-Olson's go-ahead goal, beating Wickström Stumer from close range to knot the score at 2-2.
