Softball Returns to Action This Weekend at Marshall

After a week off, the Canisius softball team returns to action this weekend with four games in the Marshall March Madness event in Huntington, W.Va.

The Golden Griffins are 4-4 on the season, having last played Feb. 20-21 at the UNCG Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. The tournament schedule for this weekend's event has been adjusted after Howard elected to dropout of the tournament.

BATTING PRACTICE
• Canisius is 4-4 on the season after going 1-3 at the UNCG Invitational Feb. 20-21. Canisius' last outing was a 10-2 loss in six innings to the host UNCG Spartans.
• Three of three of the Golden Griffins' four wins this season have come by one run. The last one-run victory came Feb. 21, when the Blue and Gold defeated Bucknell, 11-10.
• This marks the second time in three seasons where the Griffs have been .500 or better after the first eight games of the year.
• As a team, Canisius ranks third in the MAAC in team batting average (among teams with six-or more games played) at .270
• Seniors Bailey Alatorre (.353) and Sofia Escoto (.350) are both batting at .350 or better on the season, and both players rank among the top-10 in the league in OPS. Alatorre ranks fourth in the MAAC with her 1.156 OPS, and both players are tied for the team lead with three doubles.
• Escoto (7) and Alatorre (6) have combined for 13 of the Griffs' 31 RBI to date, while junior Ella Johel leads the team with eight runs scored.
• In the circle, junior Olivia Manchester and freshman Brooke Bowedes each have two wins and both pitchers have a save to their credit. In the MAAC this season, only four pitchers in the league have a save on their ledger, and two of them are on the Canisius roster.
• Dating back to last season, Manchester is 19-6 with a save in her last 28 appearances in the circle for the Blue and Gold.

OPPOSING DUGOUTS
• The host Marshall Thundering Herd are 13-8 on the season and start this weekend's action riding a four-game win streak. This weekend will be the home-opening event for Marshall after the team played its first 21 games of the season on the road.
• Akron is 6-14 on the year and starts the weekend looking to end a two-game slide. The Zips have played five one-run games this season, and the team is 1-4 in those five contests.

UP NEXT
Canisius will open the league portion of its 2026 slate with a three-game road set at Sacred Heart March 14-15.
