Softball Drops a Pair at UNCG Invitational

The Canisius softball team dropped a pair of games on the first day of the UNCG Invitational in Greensboro, N.C., Friday.

In the first game of the day, the Golden Griffins (3-3) fell to Kent State (7-4) in eight innings by the score of 7-6. In the nightcap against the host UNCG Spartans improved to 7-5 on the season with a 9-0 victory in five innings.

GAME ONE RECAP
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom half of the second, Canisius took a 4-1 lead thanks to a Kent State error and an RBI-double off the bat of freshman Renee Hester, which drove in two runs. Kent State made it a 4-2 game in the third and took the lead at 5-4 in the top-half of the fifth with a three-run frame.

Canisius regained the lead at 6-5 in the home-half of the fifth thanks to an RBI-double by senior Sofia Escoto that drove in a pair of runs. With one out in the fifth, junior Ella Johel reached first with a base hit, and then she advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Junior Alyssa Onyeagwa drew a walk to give the Blue and Gold runners on the corners, and then Escoto knocked in both runners with a line-drive double to the gap in right center.

An RBI-single in the sixth off the bat of Kent State's Brynn Libler knotted the game at 6-6. In the bottom of that inning, Canisius had the bases loaded with two outs, however the Golden Flashes were able to get out of danger, sending the game tied at 6-6 into the seventh.

After neither scored in the seventh, Kent State started the top of the eighth with a runner at second base. The Golden Flashes took the 7-6 lead thanks to a leadoff RBI-double by Leilani Johnson. Canisius had a pair of runners on in its half of the eighth, but the Griffs were unable to force any runs across.

The Griffs banged out a season-high eight hits in the losing effort, with Escoto and sophomore Bella Martin each having multi-hit performances. Sophomore Taylor McManus took the loss in the circle for Canisius after she allowed one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of work.

GAME TWO RECAP
UNCG pitcher Brooklyn Shroyer tossed a five-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts as the host Spartans defeated Canisius, 9-0. Shroyer improved to 4-2 on the year with the victory.

Canisius starter Mikaila Obenrader took the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season after she allowed five runs on five hits to go with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. The Griffs had just two base runners in the loss to UNCG, as junior Mia Martin and freshman Avyree Sherman earned walks.
