Late Run Lifts Akron Over Softball

An RBI-single by Akron's Sophia Wygast in the fifth proved to be the difference as the Zips posted a 3-2 win over Canisius in non-conference softball action Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Marshall March Madness event in Huntington, W.Va.

With the win, Akron improved to 8-16 overall while the Golden Griffins fell to 4-6 with the loss.

Akron scored in the top-half of the first, but the Griffs answered in the home-half of that inning thanks to a squeeze-bunt by senior Bailey Alatorre, which allowed junior Ella Johel to score from third. After the Zips regained the lead at 2-1 in the second, Canisius again knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Maddy Hans scored on a base hit to right field by fellow freshman Michaela Sycalik.

In the fifth, Akron led off the frame by getting the first two batters on base, which set the scene for Wygast, who took a 1-1 pitch from relief pitcher Liv Herrington back up-the-middle, which allowed teammate Brooke Sivek to score from second base. Canisius was able to end the frame, as Olivia Manchester came on in relief and got a foul-ball pop-out and a double play to end the threat.

Akron's Macy Walters earned the win in the circle after she allowed two runs on eight hits to go with three strikeouts and a walk. Herrington took the loss in the circle after she gave up the run in the fifth inning on two hits.

Johel went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the losing cause, one of three Canisius hitters to record multiple hits on the day. Senior Sofia Escoto went 2-for-3 with a double, while Sycalik had a pair of hits as well, her first career multi-hit game.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius is now 2-13 all-time against Akron.
• Five of Canisius' first 10 games this season have been decided by one run.
• Sycalik's RBI in the fourth is the first of her collegiate career.
• Johel's two-hit day was her 25th career multi-hit game.
• Escoto now leads the team with four doubles.
