Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Drops at Pair at Marshall March Madness

The Canisius softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games Friday afternoon on the first day of the Marshall March Madness tournament, hosted by Marshall in Huntington, W.Va.

In the first game, the Golden Griffins fell to Akron, 3-0, before losing to the host Thundering Herd 6-0 in the nightcap. Canisius is now 4-6 on the season, having dropped three straight, dating back to Feb. 21.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Akron Zips (7-14) scored twice in the first and then tacked on a single-run in the fifth to end a two-game slide with a 3-0 win over the Griffs. Akron pitcher Macy Walters went the distance and allowed just two hits in the shutout victory, her third win in the circle this season.

Akron took a 1-0 lead on a double-steal and then Lily Sullivan pushed the game's second run across with a sac-fly to right. In the fifth, Akron's Sophia Wygast slapped a base-hit through the left side of the infield which allowed teammate Liv Brown to score from third.

Both of Canisius' hits game in the game's first three innings, but the Griffs were only able to get one base runner to third base in the losing effort. After freshman Maddy Han's base hit in the third, Walters retired 14 of the next 15 Canisius hitters she faced to secure the victory.

Senior Bailey Alatorre had a hit for the Griffs along with Hans. Canisius sophomore Mikaila Obenrader took the loss in the circle for the Blue and Gold after she allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits to go with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.

GAME TWO RECAP
Marshall's Ava Blake ended the evening a double shy of the cycle and she drove in three runs, as the host Thundering Herd (14-8) claimed a 6-0 win over Canisius. Blake had a two-run homer in the third to give Marshall the 2-0 and then drove in another run in the home-half of the sixth with an RBI-triple to the gap in right center that put the home team up 3-0.

The six runs of support were more than enough for Marshall's Paige Maynard, who moved to 5-2 in the circle after she allowed just two hits and fanned five in the complete-game victory. Canisius junior Olivia Manchester took the loss, her first of the season, after she gave up four runs on four hits to go with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

Junior Ella Johel and freshman Talia Yermain each had a base hit in the loss, as Canisius failed to advance a runner to second base in the contest.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius is now 2-12 all-time against Akron. Friday's game against the Zips was the Griffs' first since 2016.
• Canisius played Marshall for the first time since 2009.
• Sophomore Grace Walker and freshman Abby Post were both hit-by-pitch in the Akron game. Canisius has been hit by seven pitches this season through 10 games. Last year, Canisius had 19 batters hit-by-pitch in 52 games.
• Manchester's four strikeouts against Marshall gives her multiple Ks in four of her seven appearances this season.
