Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Earns Split at UNCG Invitational

An RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth off the bat of junior Rebecca Hai proved to be the difference, as the Canisius softball team battled back and scored an 11-10 win over Bucknell in the first game of day two on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Invitational in Greensboro, N.C.

In the nightcap, the host UNCG Spartans broke a one-run game open late en route to a 10-2 victory in six innings.

Canisius is now 4-4 on the season with the split on Saturday. The Griffs' final game of the weekend in Greensboro, scheduled for Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against Bucknell, has been called off to allow teams to get on the road early and return to campus ahead of the winter storm predicted for the East Coast.

GAME ONE RECAP
With the score tied at 10-10 in the sixth inning, Hai's RBI-single through the right-side of the infield allowed junior Alyssa Onyeagwa to score the game-winning run from second base, as the Griffs battled back to earn an 11-10 victory over Bucknell (1-8). With one down in the sixth, Onyeagwa reached by error and was able to advance to second base on the play. After Bucknell reliever Avery Powers got a strikeout for the second out of the frame, Hai followed with one of her two hits on the day, which pushed Onyeagwa across the dish as the game-winning run.

In the seventh, junior Olivia Manchester came on in relief of Mikaila Obenrader and retired the two batters she faced with a pair of runners on to earn her first career save. Freshman Brooke Bodewes earned the win in relief for the Griffs.

Canisius jumped out to an early 7-1 lead after three innings after senior Bailey Alatorre and freshman Abbey Post combined to drive in five runs. Bucknell chipped away at Canisius' lead with three runs in the fourth to make the score 7-4, and the Bisons took a 10-8 lead thanks to a six-run fifth inning that saw Bucknell send 11 batters to the dish. Canisius responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth after freshman Maddy Hans drew a bases-loaded walk, and then Alatorre was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, tying the game at 10-10.

The Griffs banged out 12 hits in the win, with Alatorre, Hai and sophomore Bella Martin all posting multi-hit performances. Alatorre went 3-for-3 with a homer, a double, four RBI and two runs scored, while Bella Martin scored two runs, as well.

GAME TWO RECAP
In the final game of Saturday's schedule, Canisius took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI-double by senior Sofia Escoto. But host UCG (9-5) scored three times in the home-half of the first to take a 3-1 lead after one inning of play.

In the top of the fifth, Escoto drove in another run with an RBI-single back up the middle to trim the Spartans' lead to 3-2, but that would be as close as the Blue and Gold would get in the game, as UNCG answered with five runs in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead. UNCG ended the game in the bottom of the sixth after Laney Deane hit a two-run homer to right center.

Just one day after being no-hit by UNCG, Canisius racked up eight hits in Saturday's game, with Escoto going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Freshman Renee Hester and Talia Yermian also had doubles in the losing cause for the Griffs in the nightcap.

Sophomore Taylor McManus took the loss in the circle, while Salem Ward earned the win for UNCG after she allowed two runs on seven hits to go with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
