Athletic Department Announces Two Staff Promotions, Adds Athletic Trainer

Canisius Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Maher announced today that Jarrett Abelson has been promoted to assistant athletic director for communications, while Colin Bartoo has been elevated to the role of assistant athletic director for compliance and operations. Additionally, the University has announced that Celyna Noland has been hired as an assistant athletic trainer.

Abelson is in his ninth year on staff at Canisius, where he previously served as the department's director of athletic communications. In his role, he is the primary media contact for the Golden Griffin hockey and men's lacrosse programs, and he also oversees the athletic department's official website, GoGriffs.com. Additionally, Abelson is responsible for the supervision and management of the athletic communications graduate assistant program; he is the University's primary point of contact with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) and he is currently a part of the committee assisting with upgrading and redesigning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's (MAAC) official website.

Before joining the Canisius staff, the Rochester, N.Y., native held communications roles at Colgate, UNCW and at NAIA Northwood University (known now as Keiser University). A 2003 graduate of the University of Dayton, Abelson earned his master's degree in sport administration at Canisius in 2019, and he currently serves as an adjunct faculty member in Canisius' undergraduate sport management program.

Bartoo, who joined the Canisius staff in 2023 as the department's executive athletic operations coordinator, now oversees all aspects of Canisius' compliance office and its 21 varsity sports programs. In his new position, Bartoo is responsible for educating the athletic department and university staff, coaches, student-athletes and boosters about NCAA and MAAC rules and regulations. Additionally, he is responsible for overseeing compliance monitoring systems related to recruiting, certification and eligibility.

A native of Hamburg, N.Y., Bartoo is a member of Canisius' athletic department management staff and also plays a role in all department budgeting and business operations tasks. Before joining the Canisius staff, he spent one year as the director of facilities and events for athletics at Francis Marion University in South Carolina. There, he oversaw all day-to-day operations for Francis Marion's athletic facilities and was the event manager for all home sporting events. In 2021-22, Bartoo was an events and facilities intern at the University at Buffalo.

Bartoo earned his undergraduate degree in sport management from the State University of New York (SUNY) Cortland in 2020.

Noland joins the Canisius staff after serving as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. There, she worked directly with Miami's cross country, track and field and cheer and dance programs. Prior to her time at Miami, she held student athletic training internships with the Vanderbilt women's basketball program and the Tennessee Titans.

At Canisius, Noland will serve as the primary athletic trainer for the school's cross country/track and women's lacrosse programs while also providing athletic training support to the men's and women's swimming and diving teams.

Noland earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University at Buffalo in 2022 and went on to earn her master's degree from UB in athletic training in 2024. While working toward her master's degree, the South Glens Falls, N.Y., native spent time as an athletic training assistant with the Buffalo Marathon, and she was also a member of the Bulls softball program.
