Another Stellar Semester in the Classroom for Canisius Athletics

Canisius student-athletes enjoyed another successful semester in the classroom as they posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 for the recently completed fall semester, it was announced on Wednesday.

All 21 of the Golden Griffins' varsity intercollegiate athletic programs fashioned a team cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher, with 18 squads exceeding a 3.30 cumulative GPA.

The fall semester saw a total of 69 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Those 69 student-athletes highlighted a group of 374 student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher, representing 85% of the University's total student-athlete population.

Hockey registered a department-best 3.71 cumulative grade point average for the just-completed semester. Volleyball finished just behind hockey with a 3.71 cumulative GPA, while women's soccer was third (3.61). Softball (3.58) and men's swimming and diving (3.58) rounded out the top five, while men's cross country/track (3.56) and women's lacrosse (3.52) gave the department a total of seven programs with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher for the fall semester.

"The academic performance of our student-athletes continues to be impressive and reflects the commitment and discipline that is necessary to achieve such outstanding results," Canisius University Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Maher said. "Having all 21 of our varsity intercollegiate programs achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for the third consecutive semester is an outstanding accomplishment and speaks volumes about the work our student-athletes put into their academic endeavors and the coaches, and GriffCenter staff who support them throughout the semester."

In November the NCAA announced that Canisius had posted a Graduation Success Rate of 97 percent in its latest GSR report, the sixth consecutive year that the University's athletic department has recorded a graduation success rate that was 97 percent or higher.

The Golden Griffins' 97 percent GSR, representing incoming student-athletes from 2015-16 through 2018-19, tied them with Marist for the highest Graduation Success Rate amongst institutions from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

The data also showed that all of Canisius' varsity programs posted a GSR score of 90 or higher while a total of 12 programs recorded perfect 100 percent graduation rates: men's basketball, men's cross country/track, golf, hockey, men's soccer, women's basketball, women's cross country/track, rowing, women's lacrosse, women's soccer and volleyball.
