Hockey Tripped up by LIU in Finale

LIU scored twice in the opening 2:28 of the contest to grab an early lead and defeat Canisius, 3-2, in collegiate men's ice hockey action Saturday at the Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, N.Y.

Trent Powell and Garrett Valk notched the early goals for the Sharks (1-3-0) while Jaden Dyke recorded the eventual game-winning goal midway through the second period. Lukas Renaud got the start in goal for LIU and recorded 26 saves to earn the win.

Seniors Rhys Chiddenton and Walter Zacher tallied the two goals for the Golden Griffins (2-1-1), both of which came during the second period.

Sophomore Kolby Hay got the start in goal for Canisius and allowed two goals before being replaced by freshman Jack Lisson, who finished with 22 stops.

LIU scored on its first two shots of the game to grab a two-goal lead before the game was even three minutes old.

Powell opened the scoring just 1:39 into the contest when he snuck a shot past Hay from the right sidewall.

Valk doubled the Sharks advantage less than a minute later as he fired a shot from the point that found its way through traffic and past Hay for his first of the season.

Chiddenton got the Griffs on the board just past the midway point of the contest when he snuck a wrist shot under the glove of Renaud while on the rush to make it a one-goal game.
Dyke restored LIU's two-goal cushion just under three minutes later, beating Lisson with a shot to the blocker side from the left face-off circle to put the Sharks up 3-1.

Zacher responded for the Griffs just 1:22 after Dyke's marker, putting home sophomore L-P Fontaine's feed from below the goal line to once again trim the Canisius deficit to one, 3-2.
Canisius pushed for the equalizer in the third as it put 13 shots on goal in the final frame, but Renaud and the Sharks kept the Griffs from getting the equalizer as they held on for the one-goal victory.
