Gallucci’s Third-Period Goal Lifts Hockey Past LIU

Junior defenseman Jason Gallucci scored a power-play goal early in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and lift Canisius to a 3-2 victory over LIU in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at the Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, N.Y.

Sophomore Carter Anderson and junior Carter Patterson notched first-period goals for the Golden Griffins (2-0-1), who opened their 10-game road swing with a victory. Freshman Jack Lisson picked up his second win of the season between the pipes, finishing the game with 33 saves.

Sixten Jennersjo and Brennan Nelson accounted for the two goals scored by the Sharks (0-3-0). Daniel Duris got the start between the pipes for LIU and made 19 saves before being replaced in the third period by Lukas Renard, who finished with five saves in relief.

Anderson opened the scoring just past the seven-minute mark of the opening frame when he knocked home a loose puck during a goalmouth scramble for his first of the season.
The Sharks knotted the score at 1-1 a little more than three minutes later when Jennersjo responded with a rebound goal of his own to tie game.

Patterson answered back for the Griffs exactly four minutes after Jennersjo's equalizer, firing a wrist shot past the glove of Duris from the top of the slot to give the Griffs a 2-1 lead.
The Sharks once again had an answer, tying the game for the second time when Nelson snuck a shot underneath the pads of Lisson from the middle of the slot to make it a 2-2 contest.

After a scoreless second, Gallucci restored the Griffs lead with a power-play tally at the 4:57 mark of the third as he beat Renaud to the glove side from the top of the point make it a 3-2 contest.

That was all the support Lisson and the Griffs defense needed as they turned aside all 10 shots faced from the Sharks in the third to secure the one-goal victory.

HEAD COACH TREVOR LARGE'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"It was a hard-fought victory. Each game is different. You never know how it's going to play out. With each team scoring twice in the first period, it seemed like it was going to be back-and-forth with a lot of goals, but in a hard-fought second period with no goals, our guys started to play better defensively, started breaking out pucks better and then obviously, we get a huge goal from the power play early in the third. That's such a good thing for our team moving forward that the next time we get a chance on the power play in the third period of a tie game that we can look back on this and be like 'hey, we've been here before.' A huge goal from (Jason) Gallucci and Jack Lisson did enough tonight to get another win. So, a great team win for the Griffs.

"I'm proud of the group. It's a tough road victory that we earned tonight. Nothing was really given. LIU is a strong team. They have good skill and they play hard. They're going to check. They're good on the forecheck. They throw pucks at your net, so they create a lot of chaos. We just kept reminding our guys, just keep playing. Let's try to move pucks quickly. Let's try to get going. I liked what we were doing when we had the puck in the offensive zone. We were able to create some space, but LIU was good tonight and they had a big part in us not playing our best game. At the same time, we just kept battling. We stuck with it and it obviously went our way at the end with the goal from Gallucci.

"We need goals from the blue line. It takes some pressure off the guys that get a lot of attention from opponents. Carter Anderson played hard tonight. He gets that first goal and we talk about that all the time. If you want to score, you've got to get to the net. He did a good job of that on the first one, and then obviously a couple point shots go in. We've been working on getting into the offensive zone and creating some space up top and then going downhill towards the net. It was a nice shot by Patty (Carter Patterson). I'm glad he got one. Obviously the Gallucci goal was a great point shot through traffic. Those are the ones that you need. It's not always the pretty goals that you are going to get, especially against a good opponent. So, we're spreading out our scoring. As a coach, I have no problem with that.

"Yeah, it's special. As the leader of the program, what I'm trying to do is to pay attention to things where if I can make a special moment for somebody that has earned it with effort and commitment to our team, and Ryan (Franks) is early in his time with us, but he's done all of those things. If I can find a special moment, I got no problem playing anybody in any situation. We have depth. We have guys that compete and I just got to reward a guy that's been doing that early in his time with Canisius.

"I talked to his dad (Larry) after the practice yesterday and before I put the lineup out, I told his dad, 'You tell him.' There are only certain times you get to do this for people. It's a cool moment when I can tell a dad, 'Hey, you tell your son that he is going to start his first game tomorrow.' It's something that they will never forget and I'm happy he played well family and friends on what was a special night for him and his loved ones."
