Hockey Earns Tie, Shootout Win to Finish Ferris State Series

Canisius scored twice in a 53-second span early in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit and earn a 5-5 tie against Ferris State in collegiate men's hockey action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter.

Seniors Walter Zacher and Jimmy Goffredo and sophomore FJ Buteau each finished with a goal and an assist for the Golden Griffins (1-0-1), who won the best-of-three shootout, 2-1.

Junior Hunter Price and sophomore L-P Fontaine accounted for the other two tallies for Canisius while senior Ethan Wolthers finished with a pair of helpers.

Brian Morse notched a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs (0-1-1). Zach Bade, Justin Stupka, Hudson Darby and Owen Mehlenbacher registered the other four Ferris State goals.

Trailing 5-3 at the start of the third period, Price brought the Griffs within one just 2:26 into the final frame when he beat Bulldog netminder Alan Lendak over the left shoulder from the right face-off dot.
Buteau tied the game on the next shift, one-timing a feed from sophomore Kyan Haldenby past a sprawling Lendak to knot the score at 5-5. The game went to overtime and after a scoreless 3-on-3 session, proceeded to a shootout.

In the shootout, the Griffs scored on both of their opportunities from Fontaine and senior Noah Quinn, while Canisius freshman netminder Jack Lisson stopped two of three shootout attempts from Ferris State to secure the win.

Earlier in the contest, the teams played a scoreless first before erupting for a combined eight goals during the second period.

Canisius took a 3-1 lead in the opening half of the middle frame as Zacher, Goffredo and Fontaine all scored to give the Griffs the lead.
Ferris State responded, rattling off four unanswered goals over an 8:10 stretch, capped by a shorthanded goal from Stupka, to grab a 5-3 lead after 40 minutes and set the scene for the Griffs' response in the third.

Sophomore Kolby Hay got the start in goal for Canisius and made 19 saves in the first two periods before being replaced by Lisson, who stopped all nine shots he faced, at the start of the third period.

Lundak posted 30 saves between the pipes for Ferris State.
