Porter Picked as Hobey Baker Memorial Award Nominee

Canisius senior forward Grant Porter has been tabbed a nominee for the 2026 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, foundation officials announced on Wednesday.

Porter is one of 87 student-athletes representing the 63 NCAA Division I schools to be nominated for Phase I of the award process.

The Hobey Baker Award is awarded annually to the top NCAA men's ice hockey player in the nation. Award criteria include candidates exhibiting the exceptional character traits of the award's namesake, Hobey Baker. A legendary American hero, Baker was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America's greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football at Princeton University.

Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.

A native of Weston, Mass., Porter has appeared in all 22 games for the Golden Griffins, leading the squad in both points (20) and assists (14) while sitting fourth in goals (6). Ranking among the top 10 players in the AHA in points (T-6th), assists (5th), points per game (7th) and assists per game (4th), Porter has tallied multiple points on five occasions, highlighted by a career-high three assists in a 4-2 victory over RIT on Dec. 6.

Tabbed the AHA Forward of the Month for October, Porter led the AHA in scoring during the opening month of the regular season with 11 points (4g-7a) in nine games played. His 11 points were the most by a Canisius skater in the month of October since formation of the AHA in 2003-04 and the most by an AHA player in the month since the 2022-23 campaign.

Porter began his senior season with points in each of the Golden Griffins first eight outings, the longest consecutive point streak of his career and tied for the third-longest among all Division I skaters in 2025-26. His eight consecutive games with a point also represented the longest point-scoring streak by a Canisius player since Keaton Mastrodonato tallied a point in nine straight games during the 2022-23 regular season (Jan. 28-Feb. 19).

The Hobey Baker fan voting will run from now until Sunday, March 8 at midnight. College hockey fans can cast their vote by going to the voting website hobeybaker.com/vote. Fans can find their favorite player, then text to vote by following the instructions. A second phase of fan balloting, coming from the list of Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists, is scheduled to begin March 18 and close March 29.

The 2026 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced from a field of three Hobey Hat Trick finalists on Friday, April 10 during the NCAA Frozen Four Championship in Las Vegas, Nev. The award ceremony will be broadcast nationally on NHL Network and streamed live at hobeybaker.com. For more info on the Hobey Baker Award, visit www.hobeybaker.com.

Canisius (11-9-2, 6-6-2 AHA) returns to action this weekend as it travels to longtime rival Mercyhurst for a two-game Atlantic Hockey America series. Game one between the Griffs and Lakers is slated for a 7 p.m. start on Friday while Saturday is scheduled for a 5 p.m. puck drop.
