Baseball Falls to NC State

Box Score A second inning grand-slam from Ty Head sparked NC State to a 10-2 victory over Canisius in collegiate baseball action Friday at Doak Field in Raleigh, N.C.

LHP Dominic Fritton is credited with the win for the Wolfpack (4-5) after 5.0 innings of work that saw him fan a career-high 11 batters. RHP senior Peyton Consigli took the loss for the Golden Griffins (0-4), allowing seven runs on seven hits while striking out two in 4.0 innings.

Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as freshman Bennett Cox and redshirt sophomore Ronan Glassford singled to lead off the game before Cox was brought home by ground out from senior Trent Rumley.

NC State gained control of the game in the bottom of the second as Consigli loaded the bases before allowing a grand slam to Head to give the Wolfpack a 4-1 advantage. After the home run, Fritton struck out six Griffs in-a-row to slow the Canisius offense.

Alex Sosa extended the lead for the Wolfpack in the home half of the third with a solo shot to make it a 5-1 contest.

In the top of the fifth, the Griffs got a run back as junior Andrew Marcello drew a walk and later scored as back-to-back wild pitches brought him around from second base. The Griffs continued to threaten in the frame as they loaded the bases with no outs, but were unable to capitalize, striking out three times to end the threat.

Head posted his fifth RBI of the contest with a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth to extend the cushion to 6-2. The Wolfpack added four more runs in the inning as Matt Heavner, Justin DeCriscio and Luke Nixon all registered RBI singles, increasing their lead to 10-2 and closing out the scoring for the evening.
