The Canisius men's and women's cross country teams posted a pair of top-10 team finishes in the National Catholic Invitational Friday, hosted by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
The Griffs returned to South Bend for the National Catholic Invitational after taking a year off from the event. In the women's race, senior Kayla Schmidt led the way for Canisius with a 27th-place finish in the women's 5k, posting a time of 18:25.1.
Freshman Ella Krumpek took 30th, crossing the line in 18:31.4. Junior Jacqueline Appenheimer (19:03.9/39th), senior Taylor Heschke (19:25.1/53rd) and freshman Nadalie Latchaw (19:25.5) all placed in the top 55 out of 140 finishers.
Canisius finished with a team total of 159 points in the women's race, good for a fifth-place finish. Host Notre Dame won the women's event with 15 points with Loyola Ill. (49) and Lewis (67) taking second and third, respectively.
Junior Kyle Urban paced the men's team, finishing 42nd with a time of 25:35.8. Senior Patrick Garland (26:21.3), freshman Adam Kozman (26:23.2) and sophomore Joseph Capuzzo (26:23.5) all placed in the top 70 runners.
The Canisius men finished with a total of 224 points which placed them in eighth. The host Fighting Irish took first place with 16 points, followed by Loyola Ill. (45) in second and Lewis (102) in third.
