Baseball Faces Mount. St. Mary’s in the First Round of MAAC Championships

The Canisius baseball team opens its MAAC Championship appearance with an opening-round game against the No. 4 seed Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers at Clover Stadium in Pomona, N.Y.

The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start and will be streamed live on ESPN+. The winner will move on to play No. 1 seeded Fairfield or No.2 seeded Niagara in the winners bracket on Thursday. The loser will play directly after the conclusion of the game at 7:00 p.m., facing either Rider or Marist in an elimination bracket contest.

LAST TIME OUT
The Golden Griffins (18-28, 11-13 MAAC) are looking to rebound after getting swept at home by long-time Battles of the Bridge rival in their final regular season series of the season.

CHAMPIONSHIP REWIND
Last season in Pomona, the No. 3 seeded Griffs were defeated by Manhattan in the first round of the 2023 MAAC Baseball Championship, 17-3. Facing elimination in the 7 p.m. game, the Griffs responded by defeating Niagara, 6-2, allowing them to move to a Thursday's rematch against Manhattan. The Griffs eliminated the Jaspers by a score of 8-7 on the second day of the tournament, extending their run to an elimination game against No. 4 seed Quinnipiac. A late rally by the Bobcats allowed them to knock out the Griffs with a 7-6 win, ending their tournament run.

CANISIUS NOTES
•Throughout head coach Matt Mazurek's tenure as leader of the program, the Griffs are 13-7 in MAAC Championship contests. Mazurek has led Canisius to a pair of tournament titles during his tenure, winning the crown in both 2018 and 2022.

•Graduate Tom Peltier was named to the 2023 MAAC All-Tournament Team for his performance against Manhattan. He pitched 5.1 innings of two-hit ball, allowing one run, three walks and striking out two en route to the victory.
.
•The Griffs have never faced Mount St. Mary's in a MAAC Championship game. This will be the first MAAC tournament appearance for  the Mount after coming to the MAAC from the NEC in 2022

•The Griffs are 10-3 against the Mount all-time. Canisius dropped two out of three games to the Mountaineers in their series earlier this season in Emmitburg, Md.

•Junior Jackson Strong ranks second in the nation in stolen bases with 42 on the season. He is two behind the national leader, Justin Sierra of Fairleigh Dickinson. If he steals seven bases over the week of tournament play he will break the MAAC single-season stolen base record of 48, set by Jack Allen of Fordham in 1987

•Strong and Senior Carlin Dick were named to the All-MAAC teams on Tuesday morning. Strong was tabbed with First Team All-conference honors while Dick was honored as the All-MAAC second team utility player
