Baseball Earns MAAC Tournament Berth with Sweep of Siena

Redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki went 2-for-5 with a grand slam to pace Canisius in a 10-0 victory over Siena in the finale of their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball series Friday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins completed the series sweep of Siena and improved their record to 21-25 overall and 17-13 in the MAAC. Friday's win, coupled with Quinnipiac's 12-11 loss at Merrimack, allowed the Blue and Gold to clinch a berth into next week's MAAC Baseball Championship in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. Siena ended its season with a 20-30 overall record and 12-18 in conference play.

Zwirecki plated five runs in the contest while freshman Blake Herman also tallied a home run in the contest, launching a solo shot in the third. On the mound, sophomore Brian Smith picked up his second win of the season, coming out of the pen to provide two innings of work, allowing one hit.

Siena recorded just five hits in the contest, with the Saints registering just one hit over the final three frames. Gio Conte took the loss on Friday after three innings, allowing eight runs.

The Griffs did the majority of their damage in the second inning, erupting for seven runs on four hits to break open the contest. Herman started the scoring with an RBI double to center field before senior Owen Silliman followed with an infield single that brought home another run. Redshirt freshman Bennett Cox kept the rally going as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded while Zwirecki capped the inning with a grand slam, launching an 0-2 pitch out of the park to give Canisius a 7-0 advantage.

In the third, Herman picked up his second hit of the day, this time a solo homer to left, extending the Griffs' lead to eight.

Continuing to swing a hot bat, Canisius added two more runs across the fifth and sixth innings. Senior Andrew Marcello drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field in the fifth before Zwirecki collected his fifth and final RBI of the afternoon with an RBI double in the sixth, sealing the 10-0 victory in seven innings.
