Lexa Tabbed Sixth Player of the Year, Eleko Named All-MAAC First Team

Junior Athina Lexa became the second player in program history to be named MAAC Sixth Player of the Year while sophomore Sisi Eleko was named a unanimous All-MAAC First Team selection, as the league announced its end-of-year awards on Monday.

Lexa joins Ella Radke as the only two Golden Griffins to be named the MAAC Women's Basketball Sixth Player of the Year. Eleko is the eighth Canisius player to be voted to the All-MAAC First Team, and she is the first since Ashley Durham during the 2012-13 campaign.

A native of Thessaloniki, Greece, Lexa averaged 11.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game this season in 29 regular season games. Her 11.2 points per game scoring average rank second on the team and 13th in the MAAC. One of three Griffs to score 20-or more points in a game this season, Lexa finished with double-digits in the scoring column 16 times, highlighted by her 21-point performance at Binghamton Dec. 8. In the team's final seven games of the regular season, Lexa scored 15-or more points in five of those contests, and she averaged 14.6 points per game during that stretch.

The MAAC leader in double-doubles with 19, Eleko produced one of the most statistically impressive seasons in program history during the 2023-24 regular season. The Montreal, Quebec, native leads Canisius and the MAAC in scoring average (16.0), total points (465), rebounds per game (10.8) and total rebounds (312). The first Griff to average a double-double for the season since Jénel Stevens in 2002-03, she set the program record for total rebounds in a season by a sophomore with her 312 boards, the most for a Canisius sophomore since Shauna Geronzin grabbed 285 rebounds during the 1999-00 campaign. On Jan. 11, Eleko scored a career-high 24 points in a win over Saint Peter's, and also grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds in the season-opener at Buffalo Nov. 6.

This year also marks the first time since 2008-09 where Canisius had a player earn All-MAAC First Team accolades while having another player earn a MAAC women's basketball individual award. In that season, Marie Warner was named to the All-MAAC First Team, Radke was the league's Sixth Player of the Year and Brittané Russell was tabbedas the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year.

The Griffs will open their run at the 2024 Hercules Tires MAAC Women's Basketball Championship tournament in the quarterfinal round when the team takes on No. 4 seed Manhattan Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., at Jim Whalen Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and the Griffs' radio call will be available for free through the Golden Griffin Broadcast Network at GoGriffs.com and the Varsity Network app.
