Women’s Basketball Adds María Sánchez Pitarch for the 2026-27 Season

Canisius head women's basketball coach Tiffany Swoffard announced today that María Sánchez Pitarch has committed to join the Golden Griffins' roster for the 2026-27 season.

Sánchez Pitarch joins the Canisius program after spending the previous two seasons at Northeastern. A 5-foot-8 guard, she will have two seasons of eligibility remaining, starting next year.

"We are excited for María to join our program," Swoffard said. "She will provide experience and depth at the point-guard position, and she can distribute the basketball at a higher level. Her motor and competitive mentality complement an already gritty roster."

A native of Rocafort, Valencia, Spain, Sánchez Pitarch played 56 games and made 24 starts in two seasons for the Huskies. In 2025-26, she appeared in 28 games, where she averaged 3.0 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. She played 20-or more minutes in 12 games, and closed out her sophomore season averaging 3.4 points, 2.4 boards and 0.8 assists per outing in Northeastern's final five contests. As a freshman in 2024-25, Sánchez Pitarch played in all 28 games and was a starter in 20 of those contests.

Before joining the program at Northeastern, Sánchez Pitarch averaged 17.5 points per game while shooting 52 percent from the field in the 2023-24 Spanish Junior National Championship tournament. A two-time Spanish national champion, she was part of four regional championship teams and earned regional MVP honors, as well.
