Men’s Basketball to Meet Mount St. Mary’s in MAAC Tournament Opening Round

The Canisius men's basketball team will be the No. 9 seed in next week's 2024 Hercules Tires MAAC Men's Basketball Championship, and the Golden Griffins are set to play No. 8 seed Mount St. Mary's in the tournament's opening round on Tuesday, March 12, league officials announced Sunday morning.

Game time between the Griffs and the Mountaineers is set for 5:15 p.m., at Jim Whalen Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+, and the Griffs' radio call can be heard for free through the Golden Griffin Broadcast Network on GoGriffs.com and the Varsity Network app.

Canisius and Mount St. Mary's split the 2023-24 regular-season series, with each team winning on its home court. In the most recent match-up between the two squads on March 1, the Griffs earned a 61-56 victory over the Mount. In that game, sophomore Devean Williams was good for a career-high 20 points, while junior Frank Mitchell posted a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

This will mark the second-consecutive season where Canisius and Mount St. Mary's have met in the opening round of the MAAC Championship. Last year in Atlantic City, the Mountaineers advanced to the quarterfinal round by defeating the Griffs 67-66 in overtime. Tuesday's game will be the seventh all-time meeting between the two schools in a series that dates back to the 1933-34 season. In the six previous meetings, neither team has won a game by more than five points.

The winner of Tuesday's game between Canisius and Mount St. Mary's will advance to the 2024 Hercules Tires MAAC Men's Basketball Championship quarterfinal round to face top-seeded Quinnipiac. That game will be played on Wednesday, March 13, with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m.
