MAAC Announces New Format for 2025 Hercules Tires Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championships

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced a new format for the 2025 Hercules Tires MAAC Men's and Women's Basketball Championships at historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Beginning in 2025, the MAAC basketball championship field will feature the league's top-10 teams. This marks the first time in the league's 44-year history that the basketball championship tournament will not include every conference team. The championship will once again run from Tuesday through Saturday, with this year's games being played March 11-15, 2025. With the new championship field format, competition will commence with the first round on Tuesday with two games each for both the men's and women's for a total of four contests, which is amended from the six total games played in the previous format, which dated back to 2014. First-round games will put the No. 8 seed against the No. 9 seed and the No. 7 seed against the No. 10 seed.

"Our primary focus throughout the evaluation of the tournament format and schedule has been to elevate the visibility of the MAAC Basketball Championships," MAAC Commissioner Travis Tellitocci said. "With the Conference expanding to 13 schools, this new format establishes an effective structure for the championships, with more exciting updates on the horizon. The new bracket spotlights the conference's top teams while eliminating the strain of playing six games in a single day. After thoroughly assessing the logistics of accommodating 26 men's and women's teams, including the option of early games on campus, it was determined that extending the tournament schedule to include all teams was not the optimal strategy moving forward. By refining the championship field to the top-10 teams, we are creating a more streamlined event that heightens the excitement of both the regular season and the tournament for our student-athletes and fans."

This will mark the fifth-straight year that the MAAC has hosted its conference basketball championship events in Atlantic City, N.J.
