Duffy Named Canisius Male Athlete of the Year

Baseball student-athlete Matt Duffy was named the 2022-23 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year, the athletic department announced on Friday. Duffy is the second consecutive baseball player to earn Male Athlete of the Year honors as infielder Max Grant took home the title last year.

Duffy was chosen after a fan vote conducted on GoGriffs.com. The other nominees were Jacob Barczewski (Hockey), Ryan Edholm (Golf), and Andrew Perrault (Men's Cross County/Track).

The 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, Duffy also earned All-MAAC First Team honors after leading the league in total strikeouts (119), strikeouts per nine innings (13.28), WHIP (1.14) and hits allowed per nine innings (7.14).

The Burlington, Ontario, native wrote his name into the record book twice during the 2023 campaign. In his regular-season start versus Manhattan on May 12, Duffy recorded his 100th strikeout of the season, becoming the first pitcher in MAAC history to post multiple 100-strikeout campaigns. On May 24 during the Griffs' MAAC Championship matchup against the Jaspers, Duffy became the programs all-time leader in strikeouts with 278.

In addition to his MAAC accolades, Duffy was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Division I All-Northeast Region First Team, marking the second consecutive season that Duffy has garnered ABCA/Rawlings regional recognition.
