Edholm’s MAAC Championship Performance One for the Record Books

With his one-under par score of 71 last Sunday, Canisius sophomore Ryan Edholm ended the 2023 MAAC Golf Championship tied for fifth, earning the Tonawanda, N.Y., native All-MAAC honors. Edholm is the third Golden Griffin golfer in the last two years to earn All-MAAC accolades, joining teammate Shane Broad and former teammate Mike Donner, who both finished tied for fifth at the 2022 MAAC Golf Championship.

Edholm is the 10th different Canisius golfer to earn All-MAAC status, and he is the first Canisius sophomore to finish in the top-10 (including ties) at the MAAC Championship since David Hanes earned All-MAAC accolades at the 2018 championship. Since 2003, six Canisius golfers have finished in the MAAC Championship's top-five, with Edholm, Broad and Donner all accomplishing the feat in the last two years.

Edholm finished tied for fifth in the field after he posted a 54-hole score of 216 (74-71-71), which was even-par for the tournament. His score of 216 stands as the lowest three-round total for a Canisius golfer at the MAAC Golf Championship since the event went to the 54-hole format in 2002. The previous record was 218, set by Joe Vogl in 2013. Vogl finished the 2013 tournament tied for fifth, as well.

For the 2022-23 season, Edholm played 20 rounds through eight tournaments, making him one of two members of the squad to play in every event this season. He closed out the 2023 spring season by posting under-par scores in three of his final five rounds of the campaign, and his 74.5 stroke average ranked second on the roster among players who competed in 15-or more rounds during the year.
