Battle of the Bridge contests for hockey and women's basketball, a home game for men's basketball and a two-day event for indoor track highlight the last days of January in the latest edition of This Week in Canisius Athletics.

• The hockey team takes to home ice for the first time in 2023 this weekend as it welcomes Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara to LECOM Harborcenter for a pair of Atlantic Hockey Association games. Puck drop for both contests of the Friday-Saturday series are slated for 7 p.m.
• Friday's game has been designated a Gold Rush Contest, with fans encouraged to wear gold to the game. Saturday's game will feature a ceremonial puck drop with Canadian hockey legend Paul Henderson, grandson of sophomore forward Alton McDermott, in honor of his 80th birthday. Tickets for both games are still available. They can be purchased by visiting the tickets page on GoGriffs.com or at the LECOM Harborcenter ticket kiosk.
• Senior goaltender Jacob Barczewski was named the Atlantic Hockey Association's Goaltender of the Week on Monday. Barczewski was recognized after posting a .950 save percentage and a 1.44 goals against average over two games as he helped lead the Golden Griffins to a win and a tie at league foe Bentley last weekend.
• Senior defenseman Lincoln Erne scored his first career goal during the Griffs' 5-1 victory over the Falcons on Jan. 20. The tally, which turned out to be the game-winning goal, was the first of two points for the Blaine, Minn., native as he later picked up an assist on McDermott's second-period goal.  
• Canisius returns to action next weekend when it squares off against league-leading RIT in a home-and-home series. The Griffs and Tigers open up the two-game set at home on Feb. 3 before the series shifts to the Gene Polisseni Center the following evening. Start time for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m.

• The men's and women's indoor track teams are back in action this weekend in the YSU College Mid Major at the Watson and Tressel Training Site in Youngstown, Ohio. The two-day event gets underway Friday at 1 p.m. before concluding with day-two competition Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
• A total of Four school records were broken as the Canisius men's and women's indoor track teams took part in the SPIRE Midwest Open at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Jan. 21.
• For the men, freshman Braden Tent set a school record in the men's 600-meter race, claiming seventh place with a time of 1:24.82. Freshman Brody Jones fashioned a freshman record for the Griffs in the 800-meter run as he claimed fourth place with a time of 1:55.64. Fellow freshman Arthur Hartel established a school record in the 60-meter dash, posting a time of 7.90 seconds.
• In the women's 400-meter dash, junior Maura Jordan set a program mark with a time of 1:00.25 to claim second place in the event.
• Canisius takes part in its final regular-season event of the indoor season on Feb. 10 when it runs in the RIT Friday Invitational in Rochester. N.Y.

• The men's basketball team returns home to close out the month of January on Sunday, Jan. 29, as the Golden Griffins host Manhattan. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
• Sunday's game will be "Country Day", presented by The Cowboy, and it will also be the team's annual "Coaches vs. Cancer" Suits and Sneakers game as well.
• Canisius is coming off an 87-82 road loss to Quinnipiac Jan. 22. In that game, sophomore TJ Gadsden scored a career-high 22 points to go with 11 rebounds for his second career double-double.
• Sophomore guard Tre Dinkins scored a career-high 19 points in the losing effort at Quinnipiac. Dinkins is averaging 15.3 points per game in the last three games, where he is shooting 57.7 percent (15-for-26) from the floor and 52.6 percent (10-for-19) from 3-point land.
• Graduate student Jordan Henderson played in his 119th career game as a Griff on Sunday at Quinnipiac. He is the 14th player in the program's 119-year history to play 119-or more career games in Blue and Gold.
• Canisius heads back on the road next weekend with a pair of MAAC games. The Griffs square off against Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. before traveling to Marist for a 2 p.m. contest on Feb. 5.

• Women's basketball is back in action this week with a pair of road games. The Griffs begin the week with the 101st edition of the Battle of the Bridge against Niagara on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before heading to the Nutmeg State to face Fairfield Saturday at 2 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.  
• Junior guard Dani Haskell averaged 23.5 points-per-game in Canisius' two regular-season contests against the Purple Eagles last season. In her first ever Battle of the Bridge contest on Jan. 9, 2022, she notched 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting.
• Against Manhattan on Jan. 21, freshman forward Adrien LaMora established a season high in rebounds with seven. The Philadelphia, N.Y., product has been picking up her effort on the glass in recent games, averaging 5.7 boards-per-contest over the last three games, compared to an average of 1.43 rebounds-per-game in her first seven contests this season.  
• Canisius has been getting it done at the free-throw line this season as it leads the MAAC and ranks 36th nationally with a .764 free-throw percentage. The Griffs have shot 76 percent or better at the charity stripe in 10 of their 18 games played this season.  
• The Blue and Gold return home next week for their lone game of the week against Iona on Feb. 4. Tip-off from the Koessler Athletic Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. with the game streaming on ESPN3.
