This Week in Canisius Athletics: Sept. 13-20

Home matches for both women's soccer and volleyball, along with the induction ceremony for the 58th Canisius Sports Hall of Fame Class, highlight this week in Canisius Athletics.
 
Canisius Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
• The Canisius athletic department will induct its 58th class into the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday at the Montante Cultural Center. The dinner event, which includes a cash bar, is scheduled to start at 3 p.m., followed by the induction speeches of this year's honorees.
• Last November, the athletic department announced that Cory Conacher '11 – hockey, Allison Daley '11, MS '13 – women's lacrosse, Shane Davis '10 – baseball, Adam Jones '11 – men' lacrosse, Alan McGreal '10 – men's soccer, Cameron Norton '09 – softball and Frank Turner '10, MS '11 - men's basketball, had been voted to serve as the newest class for the Canisius College Sports Hall of Fame.
• Additionally, Canisius graduate and long-time athletic department supporter Mark G. Evans '83 was named as the recipient of the Rev. Paul J. Dugan, S.J., '45 Award, an honor that recognizes individuals for their significant contributions to Canisius athletics.

Sept. 15 – at National Catholic Invitational (South Bend, Ind.) | 4:30 p.m.
 
• The men's and women's cross country teams return to action this week as they travel to South Bend, Ind., for the 43rd National Catholic Invitational. The annual event, hosted by Notre Dame, features catholic institutions from all over the United States.
• Canisius opened the regular season with a sweep of the Little Three Championships, held Sept. 3 at the McGraw-Jennings Field complex on the campus of St. Bonaventure University.
• Senior Tom Appenheimer paced the men, crossing the finish line first with a time of 15:06.4, nearly ten seconds ahead of Clay Peets from St. Bonaventure (15:16.3). Senior and defending Little Three men's champion graduate student Michael Peppy placed third (15:37.5) and freshman Brody Jones took fourth (15:46.3), giving the Griffs a trio of top-three finishers.
• On the women's side, senior Marissa Silba won the women's 5K with a time of 18:55.6, two seconds ahead of second place Jenna Gregory from St. Bonaventure. the Griffs had five of the top seven runners as junior Olivia Moran (19:08.9), junior Jules Jones (19:17.1), sophomore Chloe Breen (19:22.4) and freshman Jacqueline Appenheimer (19:24.8) finished fourth through seventh, respectively.
• Appenheimer and Silba were both recognized by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as they were named Men's and Women's Ready Nutrition Cross Country Weekly Award Winners.

• The men's golf team returns to the links this weekend as it takes part in the Cornell/Temple Invitational.
• The 54-hole event, being held at the 1912 Golf Club in Philadelphia, Pa., features 36 holes of action on Saturday and 18-hole final round on Sunday.
• The Griffs opened the 2022 campaign at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational at Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton, N.Y., Sept. 3-4.
• Senior Shane Broad posted a two-under par score of 70 in the final round to help lead the way for Canisius, who posted a three-round score of 922 to place the Blue and Gold 14th in the tournament field.
• Broad's final-round 70 allowed him to finish the tournament with a 54-hole score of 218, which set a career-low for a three-round tournament score for the Alden, N.Y., native. He was one of six golfers to register a tie for 18th on the final leaderboard, marking his fifth career top-20 performance.

• The Canisius men's soccer team concludes its non-conference schedule with a pair of matches in Central New York, beginning with a contest in Vestal, N.Y. against Binghamton on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
• The Griffs will then head to Ithaca, N.Y. on Sept. 20 for a 7 p.m. tilt against Cornell.
• Saturday's match against Binghamton will mark the sixth time the two programs have faced one another. The Bearcats took last year's contest, 3-1, at the Demske Sports Complex.
• Canisius and Cornell will meet for just the fifth time in program history. The Big Red earned a 2-0 road victory at Canisius in their most recent matchup in 2019.
• Sophomore Reilly Boyer netted his first collegiate goal in Canisius' 1-1 draw against Little Three rival St. Bonaventure on Sept. 9. Junior Luke Szablewski and senior Inder Thind both earned their second career assists on the tally.

Sept. 17: vs Rider | 1 p.m.

• The women's soccer team begins MAAC play when it hosts Rider in a 1 p.m. contest Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.
• Saturday's contest against Rider marks the 26th meeting between the two programs. Last season, the Broncs posted a 2-0 victory over the Griffs in Lawrenceville, N.J.
• Canisius went 1-0-1 in a pair of non-conference contests last week, playing to a 1-1 draw at Little Three rival St. Bonaventure on Sept. 7 before posting a 1-0 victory at home versus Cleveland State on Sept. 10.
• Against the Bonnies, sophomore Madeline Weltin notched her first career goal in the 32nd minute on an assist from freshman Mia Iacona while junior Jessica Jones made five saves in goal.
• Versus the Vikings, junior Tiani Fonoti tallied her team-leading third goal of the campaign in the 66th minute in the while sophomore keeper Jordan Spencer made one save to post her second shutout of the season.

• Canisius opens MAAC play this weekend when it welcomes Fairfield and Quinnipiac to the Koessler Athletic Center. The Griffs begin league play on Sept. 17 against the defending champion Stags before closing out the weekend the following day versus the Bobcats. Start time for both matches is slated for Noon.
• Canisius closed out non-conference play when it hosted the Western New York Invitational Sept. 8-10. The Griffs suffered losses to crosstown rival Buffalo, Youngstown State and Bucknell during the three-day event.
• After becoming the fourth player in program history to amass 1,500 digs this past weekend, senior libero Bree Long only needs 28 digs to pass Erin Oveis (1996-99) and move up to third in program history for digs all-time. Long currently had 159 digs this season and 1,519 digs for her career.
• Freshman setter Ella Bourque is currently 19th in the country for total assists with 254. She is only one back of Loren Robertson of Memphis and Riley Buckley of Mizzouri, who each have 255 assists.
• Senior outside hitter Ella Loussia is also making national waves as she is tied with Abby Marjama of Alabama for eighth in the nation for service aces with 17. Loussia is eight service aces back of Andrea Tsvetanova of Coppin State who leads the nation with 25.
