Grant, Consigli Earn MAAC Baseball Weekly Awards

Sophomore infielder Max Grant and freshman pitcher Peyton Consigli were honored by the MAAC in its weekly awards, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.

Grant was named the MAAC Player of the Week for the third time this season after batting .650 in the Golden Griffins' four games last week. The second-year player went 13-of-20 at the plate with three doubles, a triple, a home run and nine RBI. He also scored six runs as Canisius went 4-0 in its quartet of games.

In all four games last week, Grant registered multi-hit performances, including consecutive four-hit games against St. Bonaventure (April 26) and Siena (April 29).

Grant is batting .430 on the year, having started in all 39 games this season. He has 12 doubles, three triples, eight home runs and 44 RBI.

Over 15 MAAC games, Grant is hitting at a .492 clip (32-of-65) with nine doubles, a triple, four home runs and 26 RBI.

His .430 batting average ranks second amongst Division I players, trailing Auburn's Sonny DiChiara (.436). Grant's average ranks second in program history for a season, trailing Kevin Vogel's program-record .436 average in 1985. The Fredericton, New Brunswick, native also has the highest on-base percentage in program history (.513), ahead of Ian Choy's .496 figure in 2010.

Consigli earned MAAC Rookie of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after his two outings last weekend. The right-handed pitcher earned a victory over St. Bonaventure and recorded a two-inning save at Siena.

The Fonthill, Ontario, native allowed one hit in three shutout innings while striking out six and issuing just one walk.

Against St. Bonaventure, Consigli gave up a leadoff double in the ninth inning of an 8-8 tie before striking out a pair of batters and inducing a groundout to prevent any runs from scoring. Consigli earned the victory thanks to a pinch-hit, walk-off home run by graduate student Jake Zurat.

In last Friday's victory at Siena, Consigli struck out four batters in two innings of relief of starter Matt Duffy.

Consigli has a 3-2 record and a team-leading 1.82 ERA in 14 appearances. Over 29.2 innings, he has surrendered seven runs on 18 hits and has struck out 40 batters. On the year, opponents are batting just .170 off the first-year pitcher.

In seven conference games, Consigli has a 1-0 record and three saves with an 0.67 ERA. He has 22 punchouts in 14 innings pitched in conference contests, while MAAC opponents are hitting just .128 off him.

Grant and Consigli return to action Friday when the Canisius baseball team welcomes "Battle of the Bridge" rival Niagara to the Demske Sports Complex for a three-game MAAC series. First pitch between the Purple Eagles and Golden Griffins is slated for 3 p.m.
