Baseball Announces 2023 Season Schedule

Canisius baseball head coach Matt Mazurek announced Tuesday the schedule of the 70th season in program history, a 49-game regular season slate that begins with a pair of weekend tournaments to open the campaign.

The Golden Griffins begin the 2023 season with 18 road games, starting on Feb. 24-26 at the Swig and Swine Classic in Charleston, S.C. Canisius will face Rutgers, Merrimack College, Boston College and Ball State across the three-day event.

Canisius will then open the month of March at the Central Virginia Classic in Richmond, Va., where it will face VCU, Richmond and William & Mary.

The Griffs return to the Mountain State for the fifth time in the last six seasons with a midweek contest at West Virginia on March 8 before squaring off against Marshall in a three-game set March 10-12 in Huntington.

A four-game series against Kent State March 17-19 rounds out the remainder of the non-conference games to begin the season.

The reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions begin defense of its title March 24-26 when it faces conference newcomer Mount St. Mary's in a three-game series in Emmitsburg, Md.

All MAAC series will follow a three-day format with a nine-inning game played each day, as instituted by the conference last season.

The Griffs return to Western New York to finish off the month of March with their home opener against regional foe Binghamton on March 28 before hosting MAAC rival Iona March 31 through April 2.

Canisius and St. Bonaventure continue the Little Three rivalry with a pair of home-and-home doubleheaders, beginning with a twinbill on April 11 in Olean. The Griffs then host the Bonnies on April 25 for the backend of the series.

The Griffs will also face Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara in a home-and-home non-conference series in 2023. Canisius will host the Purple Eagles on April 4 before traveling north for the second midweek contest on May 9.

The Griffs' will play host to Quinnipiac, Saint Peter's and Manhattan at home while squaring off against conference rivals Rider and Fairfield on the road.

Canisius' regular season concludes in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., with a three-game set against MAAC rival Marist May 17-19.

The 2023 MAAC Baseball Championship will once again be held at Clover Stadium in Pomona, N.Y., May 24-27. The winner of the MAAC Baseball Championship will earn the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.

2023 Schedule Notes
  • Canisius will face four of the seven opponents in the first two series for the first time in program history. The Griffs have played Richmond (April 10, 1958), Rutgers (March 16, 2015) and VCU (March 17, 2009) just once.
  • The Griffs also face former head coach Mike McRae for the first time when the team plays William & Mary on March 5.
