Hockey Releases 2021-22 Schedule

A season-opening trip to Penn State, non-conference matchups against regional rivals Clarkson and RPI, and a 26-game Atlantic Hockey Association slate highlight the 2021-22 Canisius hockey schedule, head coach Trevor Large announced on Wednesday.

The 34-game slate features an even split of 17 road games and 17 home dates. The Golden Griffins are scheduled to play seven of its eight non-conference contests before starting league play.

Canisius opens the 2021-22 campaign with a five-game road swing that begins Oct. 8-9 with a trip to Big Ten foe Penn State. A two-game series at RPI (Oct. 15-16) and the front half of a home-and-home set with Clarkson (Oct. 19) concludes the season-opening trip.

Canisius is slated to make its home debut Halloween Weekend, when it welcomes Coach Large's alma mater and CCHA member Ferris State to LECOM Harborcenter for two games (Oct. 29-30).

The month of November marks the start of Atlantic Hockey competition as the Griffs open their conference slate with a series at Bentley (Nov. 5-6). Canisius returns home for a weekend series versus RIT (Nov. 12-13) before squaring off against longtime rival Mercyhurst in the first of two home-and-home series on the regular-season docket (Nov. 19-20).

A Thanksgiving Weekend visit from defending Atlantic Hockey Association regular season and tournament champion AIC (Nov. 26-27) brings November to a close while a trip out west to Air Force (Dec. 3-4) signals the start of the December slate. Canisius will close out the 2021 calendar year with a home-and-home series against "Battle of the Bridge" rival Niagara (Dec. 10-11).

The Griffs ring in the new year with their final non-conference contest of the season as Clarkson (Jan. 3) makes its way to Western New York a single contest. After its date with the Golden Knights, Canisius returns to league play with a pair of road series at Army (Jan. 7-8) and Holy Cross (Jan. 14-15). January comes to a close at home with a matchup against Bentley (Jan. 21-22).

Following a bye week, Canisius starts the final month of the regular season with a visit from Air Force (Feb. 4-5) and continues with the second home-and-home series against Niagara (Feb. 11-12). A visit from Sacred Heart (Feb. 18-19) and a home-and-home weekend versus Mercyhurst (Feb. 25-26) bring the regular season to a close.

The 2022 Atlantic Hockey Tournament will once again feature all 11 teams and begins with first-round series March 4-6. The quarterfinal round is slated for March 11-13 and the semifinals and championship are scheduled for March 18-19. All three rounds of the tournament will be held at on-campus locations, with the highest-remaining seed hosting the semifinals and championship rounds.
