Stubbs Named MAAC Co-Rookie of the Week

Freshman guard Cheyenne Stubbs has been named MAAC Co-Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Stubbs and Marist's Siobhan Boylan are the two players sharing the weekly award.

In an 85-63 loss to Manhattan on Dec. 21, Stubbs scored eight points in 22 minutes off the bench. The Bradenton, Fla., native went 3-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-4 from 3-point range while adding a pair of rebounds and two steals with one assist.

The 5-foot-5 guard has logged multiple steals in three straight games, the longest streak by a Canisius first-year player since Anna Sweny also went three consecutive contests with two-plus steals during the 2016-17 campaign.

In 11 games this season, Stubbs is averaging 4.2 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.8 steals in just 13.5 minutes of action per contest. She is shooting 41.2 percent from the field and a team-best 45.5 percent from 3-point range.

With Lydia Gattozzi being named MAAC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 6, it is the first time Canisius has multiple players earn Rookie of the Week distinctions by the MAAC in the same season since Sara Hinriksdóttir and Maria Welch in 2015-16.

Canisius returns to action Thursday when it squares off against Marist at McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie. Tipoff between the Golden Griffins and Red Foxes is slated for 7 p.m. Game action can be viewed on ESPN+.
