Carney Scores Penalty Shot Winner to Lift Canisius Past Niagara

Team IMPACT teammate Deaglan Carney scored on a penalty shot in the final minute of regulation to lift Canisius to a 1-0 victory over "Battle of the Bridge" rival Niagara in an exhibition contest Saturday at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston, N.Y.

With the teams deadlocked in the final minute of regulation, Canisius was awarded a penalty shot following a Niagara infraction. Carney was selected by head coach Trevor Large to take the penalty shot and he delivered, sliding the puck underneath the pads of the Purple Eagles goaltender to give the Griffs the lead and send his teammates over the boards to celebrate the game-winning goal.

"We're excited that Deaglan was able to score the game-winning goal for us tonight," Large said. "He has been a key part of our program for the last few years, so when we were awarded a penalty shot, I knew he was the one that I wanted to take it. As always, Deaglan came up big when we needed him to. We're glad to call Deaglan our teammate."

Canisius opens the 2021-22 regular season next weekend with a non-conference series at Big Ten foe Penn State. The series opener is slated for a 7 p.m. puck drop on Oct. 8 before concluding with a 1 p.m. matinee the following afternoon.
