Meyer Selected as Hockey Captain for 2020-21 Campaign

Canisius hockey head coach Trevor Large has announced that senior forward Grant Meyer has been chosen to serve as team captain for the 2020-21 season.

A native of Genoa, Ohio, Meyer has appeared in 92 games during his first three seasons with the Blue and Gold, recording 15 goals and 40 assists for 55 points.

"Grant is a driven, selfless motivator who pushes every member of the Canisius Hockey team to get better every day," Large said. "He drives our culture with his relentless compete level and strives to be his best version of himself. Grant knows it is going take all of us to reach our potential as a team. The goal this season is to get a little bit closer to a championship every day. I am extremely confident in Grant's abilities to take us there."

Serving as an assistant captain for the 2019-20 season, Meyer tallied four goals and 12 assists in 24 games. He recorded multiple points on three occasions, highlighted by a pair of goals in a 4-4 tie at Bentley on Jan. 11.

Meyer appeared in 31 games for the Griffs as a sophomore, ranking seventh on the squad in scoring with 19 points on five goals and 14 assists. During his freshman season in 2017-18, Meyer was named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team after pacing Canisius' rookie class in goals (6), assists (14) and points (20).

"Ever since I came to Canisius, I've wanted to be named team captain," Meyer said. "My leadership development is something that I've worked a lot on with Coach Large, as well as our leadership coach Marc (Guevremont). It means a lot to me because it's something that I've always wanted and it's something I've worked for.

"I think about the captains that I've played under at Canisius: Schmel (Ryan Schmelzer), Eddy (Ian Edmondson) and Hoov (Matt Hoover). These are guys that I really admire and look up to. They were good hockey players, but more than that, they were great people. Just to be mentioned among those guys is a huge honor to me."
