Hockey Stumbles in Finale at Clarkson

Clarkson got goals from five different players and a 19-save shutout from Shane Soderwall as it recorded a 5-0 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's hockey action Saturday at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.

Owen Van Steensel, Hayden Reid, Tyler Wallace, Shawn O'Donnell and Justin Cote accounted for the five goals for the Golden Knights (2-2-0). That was all the support Soderwall needed as he picked up his first shutout and second victory of the season.

Freshman Jack Lisson got the start in goal for the Golden Griffins (3-2-1), finishing the contest with 24 saves.

Van Steensel opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 13:32 mark of the first period, beating a sprawling Lisson with a shot from the left face-off circle for his first of the season.

Clarkson broke the game open in the later stages of the second, scoring twice in the final four minutes of the middle frame to extend their lead to three.

Reid began the sequence at the 16:05 mark of the second period, beating Lisson to the glove side with a wrist shot from the right face-off dot to make it 2-0.

Wallace stretched the Golden Knights advantage to 3-0 with less than 90 seconds remaining in the middle frame, sneaking a shot past the glove of Lisson from the left face-off circle.

O'Donnell closed out the scoring just past the midway point of the third, placing a wrist shot over the glove of Lisson from the right point to make it a 4-0 contest.
