Hockey Takes to the Road to Face Army

The Canisius hockey team takes to the road for another tough test this weekend as it squares off against Army in an Atlantic Hockey series at Tate Rink in West Point, N.Y.
 
The Griffs and Black Knights begin their two-game set Friday with a 7:05 p.m. contest and wrap up the weekend slate the following afternoon with a 4:05 p.m. matinee.
 
Scouting Canisius
• Canisius (6-14-4, 5-9-4-3 AHA) heads into the weekend in 10th place in the league standings, four points back of a seventh-place tie between Bentley and Holy Cross.
• Senior Matt Hoover paces the Canisius attack with 23 points (10g, 13a). Hoover has been piling up points at a consistent pace in recent games, with 21 points over his last 17 contests after beginning the year with just two assists in the team's first seven outings.
• Seniors Nick Hutchison and Matt Stief are tied for second on the team's scoring chart with 21 points each. Hutchison leads Canisius with 13 goals while Stief paces the team with 19 assists.
• Junior Austin Alger is fourth on the team's scoring chart with five goals and 11 assists for 16 points. Alger has been an offensive tear of late, recording six points in the Griffs last four games (2g, 4a)
• Freshman Jacob Barczewski leads the Griffs goaltenders with a .906 save percentage and a  3.09 goals against average. Barczewski has been busy in recent games, recording 25 or more saves in eight of his last nine starts.
• Canisius has been one of the highest-scoring teams in the country over the last month as it ranks first in the nation with 37 goals scored since returning to action after the holiday break. The Griffs have scored three or more goals in all but one of their 10 games played in that timeframe.
 
Canisius Falls in Both Games of Home-and-Home Series Versus RIT
• The Griffs saw its eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end last weekend as RIT took both contests of a home-and-home Atlantic Hockey series.
• Game one of the matchup saw the Tigers rattle off five unanswered goals to take control of the contest and post a 7-4 victory.
• Senior Matt Hoover scored twice while junior Austin Alger and freshman Ryan Miotto also found the back of the net.
• In game two, Canisius held a 4-1 lead midway through the third before RIT exploded for four goals in a 3:32 span to rally for a 5-4 triumph.
• Hoover, Miotto, junior Matt Long and sophomore David Baskerville scored for the Griffs in the finale. Sophomore Derek Hamelin and freshman MacGregor Sinclair both posted their first collegiate points with assists during the contest.
 
Scouting Army
• Army (11-7-2, 14-9-2-2 AHA) heads into the weekend in third place in the Atlantic Hockey standings, three points back of the first-place tie between Sacred Heart and AIC.
• Seniors Michael Wilson (10g, 9a) and Dominic Franco (6g, 11a) have paced the Black Knights in scoring this season, racking up 19 and 17 points, respectively.  
• Junior defenseman John Zimmerman is tied for third on the team's scoring chart with 15 points, thanks to a team-best 13 assists  
• Junior Trevin Kozlowski has started all 25 games in goal for the Black Knights this season. Kozlowski has fashioned a 2.26 goals against average and .908 save percentage in 1486 minutes of action.
 
Canisius-Army Series Notes
• Canisius holds an all-time record of 28-29-6 against Army West Point, highlighted by a 26-24-6 advantage over the Black Knights in the Division I era of the series.
• The schools have been pretty evenly matched in recent contests as the teams have split their last 20 contests (9-9-2).
• The Griffs are 10-14-3 against the Black Knights in true road contests. Canisius and Army split their most recent series at Tate Rink last December, with the Black Knights taking the opener, 5-4, before the Griffs rallied for a 4-2 triumph in the finale.
• Army swept Canisius in their first series of the season at LECOM Harborcenter in November, recording a pair of one-goal victories (4-3; 3-2).
• Each of Army's last four victories against Canisius have been by a single goal.

• Canisius returns home next weekend to host Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey series at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.
• The Griffs and Falcons start their two-game set Feb. 7 with a 7:35 p.m. puck drop before wrapping up their lone regular-season series the following afternoon with a 4:05 p.m. matinee.
