Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Edged by Penn State in Overtime

Jackson Smith scored 15 seconds into overtime to lift Penn State to a 3-2 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's hockey action Saturday at Pegula Ice Arena in State College, Pa.

Mac Gadowsky and Justin Poirier scored in regulation for the Nittany Lions (2-4-0), who earned a sweep of the weekend non-conference series with Saturday's overtime triumph. Goaltender Ryder Fetterolf earned his first collegiate victory, making 26 saves.

Senior Rhys Chiddenton and sophomore David Elmy tallied the two goals for the Golden Griffins (3-4-1). Freshman Jack Lisson got the start in goal for Canisius and finished with 34 saves.

Smith's game-winning goal capped a brief but frantic overtime session. With the Canisius starting the extra session on the penalty kill, the Griffs won the opening faceoff and raced down ice, only to hit the post and have Fetterolf make a diving save to keep the puck out of the net during their rush chance.

Penn State gained possession and quickly worked the puck out of its end as it found a streaking Smith, who raced into the Canisius zone and fired a wrist shot past the glove of Lisson form the right face-off circle to secure the victory.

Earlier in the contest, Gadowsky opened the scoring at the 16:19 mark of the first period, beating Lisson with a wrist shot to the glove side from the top of the point.

Canisius scored twice late in the second period to take the lead. Elmy got the Griffs on the board at the 15:18 mark of the second period, firing home a slap shot from the right face-off circle for his first collegiate tally to knot the score at 1-1.
Chiddenton gave the Griffs the lead less than three minutes after Elmy's equalizer as his shot from close range deflected off a Penn State defender and into the Nittany Lions cage. Poirier leveled the score at 2-2 just before the six-minute mark of the third, firing a one-timer past Lisson from the bottom of the left face-off circle, setting the scene for the Smith's overtime heroics.
