Hockey Bested by Penn State in Series Opener Friday

Dane Dowiak and Andrew Kuzma tallied two goals each to pace Penn State to a 5-1 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's hockey action Friday at the Pegula Ice Arena in State College, Pa.

Jackson Smith scored the fifth goal and added two assists for the Nittany Lions (1-4-0). Josh Fleming recorded 23 saves to pick up his first win of the season.

Freshman Ben Brunelle notched the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (3-3-1). Fellow freshman Jack Lisson recorded a season-best 39 saves between the pipes for the visitors.

Dowiak staked Penn State to a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest as he beat Lisson over the glove with a wrist shot from the slot.

The teams traded goals during the opening 3:02 of the second period. Brunelle brought the Griffs level just 1:18 into the middle frame, firing a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Fleming while on the rush for his first collegiate tally.
Kuzma restored the Nittany Lions lead less than two minutes later, zipping a shot past the left shoulder of Lisson to give the home team a 2-1 edge.

Dowiak added an insurance marker just past the midway point of the contest with a power-play goal as his centering pass deflected off a Canisius defender and into the goal to make it a 3-1 contest.

The Nittany Lions scored twice in the final three minutes of the third to close out the scoring. Kuzma notched his second of the evening with an empty-net tally before Smith capped the evening with a 4-on-4 goal with five seconds remaining to determine the four-goal margin of victory.
